Baby registry advice

DH & I have started registering, we have selected most of the "big" items: car seats, stroller, pack n play, high chair, baby gates.

The small stuff is overwhelming. The recommended list provided by Babiesrus seemed to be overkill. What do we really need? We found ourselves with the most trouble in the feeding, clothing, bedding & health/safety sections. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Re: Baby registry advice

  • The BRU list IS overkill.

Feeding will depend on whether you breast feed or formula feed.  I would say either way you will need at least 3 bottles (if you decide to formula feed you may want more than these so you don't have to wash them every 2-4 hours).  If you breast feed you may want to put a breast pump on your registry unless your health insurance will cover this, then let people spend their money on something else. :-)

Clothing: a few sets of mittens/socks, a few hats, 3-5 sleepers, 3-5 onsies, and everything else people will get you regardless of whether you put it on your registry or not.  People love buying baby clothes so I wouldn't put too much on the registry or that may be all you get.

Bedding: 2-3 crib sheets/pack and play sheets (wherever baby will be sleeping), we had 3 and used all of them because of diaper leaks/spitup. Also you will want at least 2 waterproof matress pads/covers (I liked the fitted sheet ones best because they were easiest to put on, you do not need a flannel one for winter and a light one for summer, it makes little to no difference for baby), changing pad cover and I liked to have 3 of the changing pad savers for those little leaks.  Then I could just swap ot the cover and I didn't have to wash the entire changing pad cover with each diaper change (besides the savers are cheaper).  People will also give you TONS of baby blankets whether you register for them or not so I would keep those to a minimum as well.

Health/Safety: Lots of diaper rash cream, mylicon drops, infant tylenol, infant motrin, a thermometer, grooming kit (brush, nail clippers, nasal aspirator are the necessities though you will get one nasal aspirator at the hospital), nasal saline spray, baby wash/lotion.

I know it's still a long list but that BRU one is atrocious so maybe this will be a little better.

  • As far as the "feeding" section, I would register for bottles and nipples, a bottle brush, dishwasher basket and/or drying rack, some bibs, some rubber coated small baby spoons, maybe a "snack trap", some small bowls, etc. You will want a minimum of 3 bottles if you are nursing and more like 6-9 if you are formula feeding or pumping. If you plan to pump, you may also want some milk storage bags, nursing pads, etc

I would NOT register for clothing as people will buy you plenty of clothing and it likely will be whatever they like, not what is on your registry. The exception would be plain white onesies- just my opinion but don't get Gerber ones, they are too small and are kind of scratchy.. I really liked the Carter's brand ones. I would also register for some cloth diapers for burp rags.

As for bedding, I HIGHLY recommend getting some "sheet savers"..they are basically like a mattress pad you put over your sheets that snap around your crib slats-that way if there is a blowout/puke in the middle of the night, you can just take that off without having to remake the bed. I would also get 2 changing pad covers and a "breathable/mesh" bumper.. keeps their limbs in without the SIDS risk of a regular bumper.

As far as bathing/health/safety, I would register for some hooded bathtowels and washrags, a baby tub (we got a simple blue plastic one with no sling and it worked great), a thermometer (rectal is fine or a simple digital underarm one..the ear ones don't really work til they are bigger), some finger nail clippers...I suppose you could register for baby proofing stuff too like outlet covers.

I would also register for diapers and wipes..

Wow that was a book.. apparently I like baby shopping  :-)

  • Thanks ladies! Do you have any monitor recommendations? I've been looking but it seems that the reviews are conflicting.

    So far I've looked at:

    Sony BabyCall Monitor $70 Target

Graco Secure Coverage Digital $55 Walmart

Summer Infant Slim Clear Digital $80 Babiesrus

I'm open to others as well, these were just ones that had higher reviews. I'd prefer not to spend over $100 & only need an audio monitor. Thanks again!

  • If you BF, register for the storage & feeding kit (I think that's what it is) if you will get a Medela pump. (Medela is what Mercy supplies.) I really like the bags for storage too, but the bottles are better if you are on the go.

People tend to give outfits, blankies, and the bath sets pretty freely so I'd register for very few of these.

I don't have the list up and am not in thinking mode so no book from me!
