Free zoo admission

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Blank Park Zoo officials said they are offering free admission on Friday as part of a fundraising event for their planned African project.

The zoo is asking for a donation of at least $10 per family to go towards the construction project."At the Big Dig, you?ll learn about the Africa construction project -- the new animals, exhibits and features coming to Blank Park Zoo,? said Mark Vukovich, CEO of Blank Park Zoo. ?This is an exciting time for Blank Park Zoo, and the impact this will have on future generations.?Blank Park Zoo recently opened the David Kruidenier Australia Adventure and is currently in the final stages of completing a new Seal and Sea Lion pool.Construction on the $9.5 million exhibit is scheduled to begin after Labor Day.Friday the first 1,500 children will also get a free construction hat, a chance to help dig dirt of Africa, a picture with a meerkat and other activities.Blank Park Zoo hours on Friday will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
