Detroit and surrounding area

Anyone lived, visited?

Any recommendations for sites to see and stuff to do?

We are headed there in September and I'd love to see a couple museums and visits some tourist attractions.

TIA

Re: Detroit and surrounding area

  • I spent a fair amount of time in Michigan as a kid because my maternal grandma lived there. But I don't remember spending any time in Detroit really (she lived more than 2 hours away). We did go to Holland, Michigan, which is not far from Detroit. It's a Dutch themed area, kind of like Solvang is with all things Danish. They even have an amusement park called Dutch Village that was fun to go to as a kid. You can get your own wooden shoes made. And there's Windmill Island where you can tour an authentic Dutch windmill.

Nevermind me saying it's close to Detroit. I was having a brain fart. It's close to Grand Rapids, where she lived. It's 3 hours from Detroit. Sorry!

  • Thanks H for the thought! =) That's probably a little far for this trip, but I will definitely keep it in mind for another future trip to MI.

The family we are headed to visit live about 40 minutes from the Detroit airport in a burb. I think DH and I are going to take a day (with DS too) and head into the city to check it all out.

I asked if we could go to the trailer park that Marshall Mathers grew up in. ;)

I posted on the Detroit local board so I'm sure they'll have some good suggestions.

    Thank you!!!

  • where exactly in suburban detroit are you going to be ? .. my dad lived in SE MI for nearly 20 years (he's in OH now) and i spent 5 years there as a kid myself.

if you're w/in an hr of detroit .. there's ford farms, lots of auto museums (check out the one in yipsilanti - its the last hudson dealership), downtown ann arbor, belle isle park - that's all i can think off of the top of my head.

SIL and her family live in West Bloomfield. Thanks for all the ideas...I've been searching google and yelp this morning. I think there will definitely be a lot of driving because everything is so spread out.

It is also DS's first time on a plane, so I'm trying to prep myself for both the travel and the actual trip.
