Re: Sewists
I haven't researched a new machine in years--and technically, I didn't even pick out the one I have. Santa gave it to me a really long time ago. But, here are my 2cents.
From the .24 seconds of google searching I did, it looks like the machine retails around $150, so I agree...it is not worth fixing (shoot, that is half the cost right there). Although, looking at her post, if she has only used it twice, is it still under warranty?

It might be but I think her ex bought it for her and they've been apart for years. I guess I should ask, huh?
I do wonder about the shop though.
Click me, click me!
It might be out of warranty then.
I would encourage her to shop around. While there is a lot to be said about buying from and supporting local shops, you often pay a premium. I was recently in a sewing store and saw my low-end brother 1034d serger on sale...for more than $100 than I paid for it online. It might have come with classes, but for the price difference, I could pay for classes if I felt I wanted/needed them.
$200 seems to be a good ceiling for her since she doesn't sew a lot. No need to invest in a super-cool machine for it to collect dust.
