I really want a nook or kindle for my birthday but I have no idea which is best? Anyone have any complaints about either?
Thanks!

Re: Kindle or Nook?
Both my H and I love our Kindles. He got his first (it was a gift from me) and I loved it so much, I got one for myself as well. Can't recommend it highly enough.
I spent a lot of time looking into this last year around Christmas. The only think I liked better about the Nook was they had library lending available, which the Kindle didn't. However, amazon announced a few months ago they are doing library lending, probably sometime this fall. I finally got a Kindle about a month ago and adore it.
Major differences:
Kindle isn't backlit, so you need a light to read at night. It is awesome in the sunlight. I believe the black and white version of nook is the opposite.
The Kindle isn't touch screen at all and has a full keyboard. The nook is entirely touch screen.
Kindle has a text-to-speech feature, and a web browser feature, neither of which are on the Nook.
The Kindle has an internal battery, so if it ever does go out, you have to send it to amazon. Nook has a removable battery.
I've heard mixed reviews of Barnes and Noble's customer service, but Amazon's is AMAZING. I actually had something funky going on within my amazon account online, and they fixed it in like 2 minutes.
Like I said, I love my Kindle...I just liked the features it had better, but it usually is a personal preference. Everyone I know with a Kindle loves it, those with a Nook love it. My suggestion is if you have a Best Buy near you, go in and play around with each (they have demos). This will help you get a feel for both.
I just researched these last week for a gift for my mom and I own the original Nook.
There are currently 3 Nooks available:
The original has e-ink (like the Kindle) and is not back-lit. It also only has a strip at the bottom that is touchscreen. Currently $119 at B&N.
The new Nook touch (forgot the official name for it) is completely touchscreen and has e-ink and is not back-lit. It's smaller than the original, but the actual reading area is the same size. The battery life is 2 months per charge. Currently $139 at B&N
The Nook Color is like a tablet. It's touchscreen and is back-lit. It doesn't have e-ink and is more difficult to read in bright light. The battery charge doesn't last as long as the other two Nooks with e-ink. Don't know the price for this one, but it's at least $100 more than the other two models.
B&N has a dedicated desk at B&N just for the Nook, so if you have questions or problems, you can get help in the store. They have been very helpful with the few questions I've had. I've not had any issues with my Nook and I've had it just about a year.
I would wait until the new Kindle comes out. It will probably be out in time for Christmas. It will have all the perks of a color touch screen nook but will still have e-ink technology so that you can have amazing battery life and read it outside sans glare.

ETA: I have a Kindle and I love it. I just want to stop getting magazines via mail and have them on my Kindle but I feel like magazines need color. I'm definitely going to grab one of the new Kindles when they come out.
