Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am getting a majorly late start to choosing a day care and pediatrician. Can you moms tell me where the eff to start? How the heck did you choose these things? I have a couple recs I've received, but my head is spinning with such little time left. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Re: child care/pedi help
Thanks for the reminder - just another thing I have to do and it slipped my mind.
We love love love our family doctor so I am planning on giving him a call and seeing if he recommends anybody.
this! deep breaths! You're def not late on the pedi or daycare.
We in fact used one for a year from word of mouth and now we're switching for new baby. When you get word of mouth also look up reviews online from other "real people". I also found that once DS was born my parenting style didn't quite match with the pedi. (I didn't know that pre DS because I had no parenting style lol)
Daycare wise..... I selected 5 or 6 to go visit. I googled questions and made a questionnaire. I visited each one at a typical drop off time to see how the teachers handled the busy time of day. (this was important to me because as a teacher I knew that beginning/end of day are craziest and that's when the best management comes out) I'd also ask to stay for a bit (30 minutes ish) and then ask the director more questions. So it took us about 90 minutes to scope out a place (places we got good vibes from........ 2 or 3 we left within 15 minutes)
So DH and I had our top 2. Picked number 2 because of $.
DS was born Dec 21st........... Dec 31st we received a letter that stated: Daycare closing immediately........ at that point DH had a new job in a different location (daycare 1 was near our home, not near either work) so we were back searching again....... with a newborn!!
So relax! You'll find something and you aren't too late!
I wouldn't go crazy with pedi. Talk to friends and family. Research online. I treated it the same as I would for picking any new doctor. If you aren't happy, it's not a super big deal to move. I was a major slacker on this and ended up having Emma before I had even talked to any pedis. So I asked the NICU, I looked up some Best Docs lists online, and called one. One of the doctors there had done some specialized education on preemies so that cinched it.
One thing to think about is what you like as far as a big busy office with lots of docs or a smaller office where you get to know the doctors. I've always gone to bigger doctors offices, but for the pedi I decided on a smaller office with only three doctors. It has worked out for us, but I know it's not for everyone. We know all the doctors and nurses, they all know Emma. We never have problems getting appointments and are always taken right back to a room. That meant a lot to me when Emma was really small, and also when she had pneumonia and was having problems breathing. She didn't need anymore germs, healthy or not.
I'm not much help for daycare, we use a friend's mother, who runs an in home daycare. But I know you are fine. Some places will be full, but there will be plenty of great ones that aren't.
We had big time feeding problems in the hospital - he was so wonderful, telling us that we needed to give the baby a small amount of formula bc she wasn't producing enough diapers and her mouth was dry. But he showed us how to do it in a bf friendly way with a cup or syringe after we nursed to make sure she was getting enough. He was kind and encouraging and prob a big reason why I'm still bfing today. So, bottom line, go with one who shares your philosophy. The support in the beginning is really important.
Whenever I would feel overwhelmed and behind on my to-do list while pregnant I always remembered that those chicks on "I didnt know I was pregnant" didnt have ANYTHING prepared before hand and their kids came out of it okay. Or maybe they just dont show the episodes where things didnt work out very well ;P
I knew we needed a daycare center over in-home because outside of weather issues, I always have someone to watch her. I asked people for recommendations and fortunately one of the places we really liked had an opening.
As for a pedi, the OB gave me a list to choose from and honestly, I picked one that was affiliated with CHOP and close to the daycare. I didn't interview or anything because i figured if I didn't like them, I can always change.
