Hatteras Island: What to do?

DH & I are going to Hatteras Island with some friends in September. We've never been to the OBX & I was just wondering if any of you had any suggestions, besides laying on the beach. Wink

I know we want to go to the lighthouse & possibly take the ferry to Ocrakoke (worth it?). What else would you suggests? TIA

  • Im not sure what kind of budget are you trying t stay in, but I highly recommend horseback on the beach if you can swing it. DH surprised me with that trip on my birthday a few years ago and I LOVED it.

  • The ferry to Ocracoke is definitely worth it.  It's only about a 40 min trip and it's free.  Ocracoke is really cute.  I just spent a week there at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.  Go to Mermaid's Folly...it's a cute little shop, and there is a pirate themed shop on the right as you come into town that's go.  Howard's Pub is also their big draw, but I didn't see anything spectacular about it.   Ocracoke has a lighthouse too.
