Tree question

The city came today and completely destroyed one of our trees in the backyard near the power line. Does the city not have to notify you before they do that? We could have moved the tree to another location in the yard if they would have said something. Now, I think they butchered it so much we're going to have to put it out of its misery. The whole line of trees along the fence line that stretches probably 3 blocks are all destroyed. Sad

Re: Tree question

  • I wouldn't think so if the trees were within the easement. Our fence at our old house was next to the power lines and we were under the impression that it was far game to be torn down if the city needed back there.

  • They can do that. They are more concerned about keeping the power on than people's trees.

  • It sucks, but yeah, it's pretty standard for them to cut back trees as needed without much/any notice.  Can you realistically move a tree that is large enough to interfere with powerlines anyhow?  The root structure goes out about twice as far around as the canopy and much deeper than that.
  • Trees are also quite resilient. If you want to spend the money, you might have an arborist come out and check the tree out, and see if trimming it back farther or just cleaning it up a bit might help. The city does tend to just hack away without care, but it is likely salvageable, though you'll want to make sure to keep it clear of the power lines in the future so they don't do it again.

  • We have a tree company coming next week to look at it. Hopefully it can be saved.

  • I hope they can save it! The city tore up our sod once. They had to replace it and came back to make sure it was growing ok. We talked to the workers on sight so that doesn't help you much to know who to contact. Maybe the action center can give you more info?
