trash cans

We're living in an apartment so I can't exactly go outside and hose down our kitchen trash can.  How do you girls clean/de-smell your trash can and is there anything i can do for some preventative maintenance between cleanings?  Thank you

Re: trash cans

  • Totally understand--it's definitely tricky!  I usually spray the trash can with Lysol spray when we empty it, which definitely helps with the smell.  For cleaning, I guess you could clean it in the bathtub, but that's pretty disgusting...sorry I can't really help you with that part!

  • Lurker here, but does your apartment complex has a car wash area that you can possibly use. I also put baking soda in my trash can.

After emptying mine, I spray it with Lysol, lid and everything and close it and let it sit for a while before putting a new bag in. Usually does the trick.  :)

  • Sweep or scrape up any stuck on chunks.

Then poor in a pitcher or two of hot tap water and a cup of baking soda. Swish it around a bit, scrub anything that needs to be scrubbed, and then dump it down the toilet (it's really important to get any chunks out first so you don't clog the toilet!!) Also, don't freak, because the toilet will flush itself and the water in the bowl will go down if you dump the water in fast. Take this opportunity to scrub your toilet too.

After you're done, put baking soda in the bottom and use trashbags.

  • I wipe mine down with a mix of tea tree oil and water. Then I wipe it down with lemon furniture polish - smells nice and keeps things from sticking so they're easier to wipe off.
  • Spray with 50/50 vinegar/water solution, wipe dry & air out overnight.
