I tried to get the major countries I've seen on here (and threw in a few others)...I can't list every country so sorry if I missed yours!

  • I will be shocked if another person votes South African. We have had a few SA's visit us, but no one has ever stayed. I swear I feel like I am the token 'african' on the IN board Wink.

  • I choose SS because while I live in the states now, I lived in Israel for 17 years and plan on going back there. So I am a dual citizen of the US and Israel. Not more than the other.
  • I chose US but I was born in Israel and have dual citizenship. After February 2012, I will be applying for UK citizenship as well so three passports!

That's cool! I always heard the UK only allows dual citizenship. I thought they didn't allow for three. I guess I heard wrong.

  • It won't let me vote for some reason (it shows me the results when I open up the post) but I have both US and Dutch citizenship. Dutch I guess is my primary since that is where I was born and raised.  No intention of ever moving back there but it is nice to have an EU passport and it will be nice for my DD too since she will be able to have 2 passports at least until she is 18.  You never know when it will come in handy.....Became a US citizen in 2007 after having lived here for 17years

  • Born and raised in the UK, although I have been living in the US for 15 years now. I have no desire to get naturalised. Plus it costs almost 700 dollars for the privilege. Yuck.

It's a 'don't ask don't tell' situation. I'll have to travel into and out of the US on my US passport, they dont' want to know about my other citizenships. It means though that if anything happens while i'm in the UK, the US embassy won't help me since I'm a UK citizen first while I'm here.

  • I only have US, born and raised here. I wish we'd stayed in the UK long enough for me to get citizenship but opportunities come when they want and DH got the offer to move here so we took it. Maybe someday! Bruce holds both and Evelyn will as soon as I apply for her passports. DH will hold both someday, too. He just got his green card this year.
  • I'm waiting to get my UK citizenship - they're taking a LONG time to make up their minds and get me out of the queue!
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • Only US.  The German government currently makes you renounce your "home" citizenship when you become a citizen, and since that isn't likely to happen, I'll stay a citizen of only one country.

  • I am US only. I could get Ethiopian citizenship through DH but a) we'd have to live there and b) I'd have to renounce my US citizenship. Noooooo way is that happening. DH will probably naturalize within 3-4 years once he's eligible and we have the cash.
  • I'm Dutch.

I would've only been able to get US citizenship if I renounced Dutch citizenship and there was no way I'd do that. (That, or I would have to marry a US citizen, which I doubt FH would be too happy about.)

The US would've probably granted me dual, since about 75 percent of my family are US citizens and they could have pretty much all have been willing sponsor me, but since I didn't want to give up being Dutch that didn't happen.

You don't have to renounce previous citizenship to be naturalized in America.  There are residency requirements (as with most countries if you want to get their citizenship) but I don't think you have to prove you've renounced your previous citizenship in order to become American.

If that's what you meant.  Not sure if your situation is wonky in some other way.

For the two of us to get British citizeship, it's going to cost about 3,000 pounds. so like $4,500. It seems worth it to us right now but it's kind of overwhelming to have that as part of our budget for next year!

Holy crap. That is expensive. What is the naturalisation process like? Here it's an interview, a written and verbal test. I have no clue about American government, so I'm getting a little worried about how I will fare.

  • Hell yeah I would pay $4,500 for EU citizenship.  Hell. Yeah.

  • My Aussie citizenship was about $260 AUD, and it was really such an incredibly easy process, I kept thinking I must be doing something wrong!

    Yup, we haven't hesitated!

The way we came in was on my DH's work permit which you can have for 5 years. That was like ?800 or something but we didn't have to pay it since DH's work covered it. After 5 years you have to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) which was like ?1,600 I think? (Tried to look it up but it's gone up since we did it in February!). DH's work helped out with that one too which was lucky and unexpected. After a year we can apply for citizenship - so in February 2012. Right now that's ?1,294 for the two of us but it's likely to go up by then also!

But having an EU passport is worth it to us. We can stay here as long as we want with our ILR but I think it will be much easier to plan our lives with an EU passport. In my fantasy life, we end up in Italy some day...

  • From start to finish, the UK process took me 8 years and cost me ?4000 (approx).

    Totally worth it.

I'm dual Aussie and UK - only Aussie on the board (assuming Knitty doesn't show up and I sincerely hope I haven't jinxed that!)
