2 naps to 1?

When did your LO go from 2 naps to 1?  How did you know they were ready?  Mine are still on 2 naps, while most of my friends said their LOs went down to 1 nap soon after turning a year old.  Mine seem no where near letting go of a nap.  Their morning nap is usally 60-90 mins and their afternoon nap is usually 90-120 mins AND they still sleep 12 hours straight at night.  It's just hard to plan a whole lot during our day because I feel like we are always rushing home for a nap.

Do I wait til they start fighting a nap?  Or having trouble sleeping at night?

Thanks!

Re: 2 naps to 1?

  • MacKenzie has always resisted taking naps and going to bed.  Since I am not working during the summer, we are going to bed later and waking up later.  She usually only gets one nap in (right after lunch).  Once the school year starts, I am hoping she will go back to two naps, one in the morning and one at afternoon.  If they aren't fighting it and still sleeping well at night, I would totally keep that up.  Gives you a break and keeps them rested.
  • Quinn went from 2 to 1 around 14 months or so.  He basically quit sleeping during his afternoon nap.  We moved his morning nap back a bit and he did great pretty much from day 1.  I do have a friend whose DD is 1.5 and still takes 2 naps a day, and one of DH's cousins DD took 2 naps a day until she was over 2.  Every kid is different and while it may be inconvenient now, if they have a good thing going, I'd try and stick with it.  As someone who is facing no naps anymore, I dream of the nap days with bliss.  Good luck!

  • I can't remember exactly when DS went to one nap a day, but I definitely think if the 2 naps a day thing still seems right for them, go with it until it doesn't.

  • We were right around 14 or 15 months mainly because I was ready to start doing playdates and they always fell in the middle of morning nap!  It was an easy transition for us and their afternoon nap turned into super long naps so it was awesome for me!  My guys still nap to this day although it's a battle more often then not to get them down.  And then if they nap during the day beditme becomes a battle!  I am just not ready to give up those 2 hours of the day to myself to save an hour at night though!

I say go ahead and make the transition now!  They will be fine and that way you have a little more schedule flexibility:)

  • I honestly can't remember a time when DS took two naps reliably.  By the time he was crawling at about 8 months, he was already down to just one nap.  Somedays he won't even go down for that nap.  Thank god he at least sleeps well at night!

  • Ahh, I miss the days of two naps.  Now it seems Macy hardly wants to take one.  She only sleeps for about 45 minutes anymore :(

Anyway, I just followed Macy's lead.  I knew the second nap phase was over when she screamed in her crib for a week straight when it came time to lay her down.  The next day I gave the whole one nap thing a shot and we never looked back.

I think this happened when she was about 14 months old?  Maybe 15?  IDK, I can't really remember!

  • I envy all the parents who's babies still take 2 naps.  DD takes one nap a day, and only if she is at home.  If we are out or at someones house she will fight it.  She is afraid to miss something.  I just let her tell me when she needed a nap.  I would try to put her down in the morning and she resisted so we stopped going for a morning nap.
