Quite shocked...am I really this out of the loop?

I saw a friend tonight who has a 6 year old daughter. Her daughter is taller then the average 6 year old, but doesn't have an ounce of fat on her.

At her school's summer program/day care children have been calling her fat.

She told her mom she wanted to kill herself because of that.

SIX YEARS OLD and this is happening???!!!!! I really am shocked. Am I just being naive? Is this the norm nowadays?? I cried on the way home thinking how awful it is that our society has come to this. I would almost expect this with teenagers(not that it makes it right AT ALL) but the little girl is just going into first grade!

I know my friend has tried to teach her daughter to be self confident too. Ugh, I don't know it's just so sad!

  • This made me want to throw up.

I will say, on a positive note, that at the camp I'm working at this summer, we've had over 500 campers so far and there has been no teasing of anyone for their weight. We have girls that don't eat enough, boys who don't have a lot of muscle and are short, girls who are skinny but still jiggle because they have absolutely no muscle tone, a couple severely obese kids, kids with tons of muscle and no fat, and everything in between. I think it's awesome that not only do the campers not mention weight, but the counselors also are weight-blind and encourage the campers to participate in activities that make them happy-- from sedentary arts-and-crafts to more active hiking and sports-- and don't make a big production about their kids' eating habits (at least not around the kids).

I hope your friend's 6 year old daughter learns quickly that those kids who are teasing her clearly are jealous of her and are inventing something to try and knock her down a notch or two! Poor thing!

  • I haven't heard anything like that around school, but in SPED the kids are nice and accepting of differences. I don't have too much contact with the general population.

I hope that she can re-gain confidence and self-esteem. I also hope that her parents mention something to the camp so they can be on the look out for bullies.

  • I was thinking about this the other day. I remember when a kid I babysat told me I was "kind of fat" (which I was, but still)....he was like 4 or 5. How does a kid that young even know what fat is?? Is it media? Parents? It kind of freaks me out.

  • OMFG!! My stomach just turned reading that. I assume it's the little girl I saw with you last night? That girl was sooo not fat at all. That's just so awful that's happening. When we were at camp last weekend I overheard one of the little girls at the camp next to us say "This life jacket makes me look fat. I don't want to wear it" (she was like 10 years old). She was NOT fat at all, and it really bothered me that someone that young could even be worried about looking fat.

Some kids can be so rotten. I had a few kids in elementary school that made fun of me for various reasons (too quiet, being blonde, not wearing nice enough clothes). It was horrible. I feel so bad for your friend's little girl. All it takes is 1 or 2 kids to make life miserable. :(

My child is never being let out of the house. :(

I was thinking the same thing!

And yes it was her...isn't that ridiculous? I felt so bad :(

I hope so too! Yes, I knwo her mom talked to the director, and the director is supposed to talk to the children. Hopefully she does.

I am really glad to hear that your camp hasn't had any issues like this! It makes me feel a little better knowing it may no be the norm and hopefully this was an isolated incident? It's just so scary!

  • In these ways I'm so grateful to have boys - though I'm not naive and know they are subject to societies criticisms too. But I do hope to have a girl one day and this is the stuff that scares the crap out of me.

I am scared because of this! I love having a girl, but I hate that she will probably have to deal with the mean-girl stuff. It's heartbreaking. I can't believe they are worrying about their weight at six!

  • That is so sad. I don't want to think that it's the norm but I'm afraid it's becoming more and more common. It makes me worried for the little girls I know. The little dude has a 7 yr old (half) sister and I hate to think about this kind of crap happening to kids her age.

I don't think I got called fat till ... oh, about 11 years old. Ironically it was by a boy who was actually very, very overweight.

The saddest part is that in my experience anyway, nothing a parent or anyone else says can change that negative connotation that a child builds about themself. I was pretty vulnerable and low on the self-esteem department and being called fat in middle school (I wasn't) and then later taunted for having a large chest in high school really affected me. It has taken a long time to appreciate my own body and accept it. Some kids are a lot stronger and can shake it off but I know that plenty are like me, and like your friend's little girl, and it gets to them. Sad

So awful Sad I was shocked at how much bullying was in the school I interned at years ago and at such a young age. Horrible.
  • This just made me so sad! And right about now I'm pretty glad Joshua is a very protective older brother of Leah and he won't let anyone hurt his baby sister Wink

  • I was just thinking on my way to work today. When I was younger I was very tall and thin. In 5th grade a girl who was much larger than me made fun of me for being thin. This post just made me think of that. Really can't win either way with some kids...they'll always find something to pick on others about. :(

  • That's heartbreaking!! I cant even imagine :(
