POLL: open shelves in kitchen, timeless or trendy ?

Centsational Girl recently had this survey and I was curious to see the personal opinions about it here...

[Poll]

Re: POLL: open shelves in kitchen, timeless or trendy ?

  • I love open shelves, but I think it looks better when you have pretty stuff that kind of goes together in them. I have all types of mis-matched plates and stuff, and not mis-matched in a cute, ecclectic way. I like to cover it up!

Agreed. I also like the look of a couple of open shelves mixed with regular cabinet doors.

  • Everything in my closed china cabinet gets filthy, I can't imagine keeping open shelves clean (let alone organized)
  • Trendy, but more than that: Impractical!

Yeah, a couple of open shelves up high looks nice. You can put pretty vases and things up there on display. But the whole thing looks awful usually. It's very impractical.

weirdly, the stuff on our open shelves stays clean. Probably because it's what we use regularly - so with the exception of some of our superfluous glasses, there's not time for anything to get dusty.

I voted for "other" because I like glass-fronted shelves, but I took the doors off of almost all of our uppers...due to poor engineering, any time I wanted to open them I had to fight and pull and then I would end up braining myself with the corner of the door. But I couldn't move the handles so that they were next to the magnets because we rent. He's ok with us taking the doors off, though, so they're in the summer kitchen...waiting to be tossed when we buy this place and make it awesome.

I feel (obviously) that the kitchen is a place for utility. If it's not useful, if it's an outright hinderance, get rid of it...even if it's the cabinet doors.

  • Usually I don't care if something is timeless or trendy. I say if you like it, go for it. But... I really don't care for open shelves. You've got to keep everything totally neat and my dishes don't all match. Sounds like too much work.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

I'm so tempted to post a picture of my open shelves because all of the resons being posted for not liking them (has to be cute/match) are out the window here.

but like I said: braining myself on the doors + renting = open shelves ;-)

  • I think if there are a few open shelves it is timeless, but the whole kitchen is more trendy. For this poll I voted trendy. I do like a few glass doors in a kitchen.

  • I don't really find it trendy. I do find it impractical - I think it only works if the things you own are all very pretty and kind of go together. If you have too much or stuff that doesn't quite go together, then I think it can cross into messy/cluttered territory very quickly.

All of my kitchen cupboards are so full of mismatched stuff - we have so much kitchen stuff and not a ton of space - that it just wouldn't work for us.
