Clearly I've Had My Head Up My A$$

Someone explain to me why the US isn't going to be able to pay it's debts if the debt ceiling isn't raised before August 2nd?

And is this just debts in the traditional sense such as loans or are we talking about having another government shutdown?

Re: Clearly I've Had My Head Up My A$$

  • Wish I could help, but my head's been up my azz too.  All I know is Republicans and Democrats won't compromise (shocker!) and they are nearing the deadline.

I use to care about current events, and then I had a kid that ate my brain.  Someone smart come in and help!

    Shot first, questions later.
  • Because they don't have the money to cover all their "bills" so they need to borrow money to cover it.

Okay then why did POTUS say in his address this morning that raising the debt ceiling wouldn't allow us to incur even more debt?

This basically sounds like you're taking one credit card to pay another credit card.

  • Eta: this is my (obviously) overly simplistic view of the problem

  • I didn't hear the POTUS speak. Perhaps I'm not understanding what a debt ceiling is if not to raise the limit of debt? I've been trying to read on CNN and such (also p&ce) but I could be totally wrong

  • The debt ceiling is essentially raising our credit card limit.  We (the government) spend more each month than we make.  We need to borrow money in order to pay the bills.  I didn't hear the speech this morning so I can't speak to specifics.

  • We're anticipating putting the brakes on upcoming courts-martial if it isn't resolved.

  • I've been trying to keep up with it, but I'm still so confused. I heard the POTUS speak this morning, but that confused me even more. I'm still reading and trying to figure it out.

  • Sad to say that I am just to annoyed to care any more.  I want to just fire everyone in Washington and start all over!!!

I heard on NPR that we get into almost 2 BILLION dollars worth of debt, as a country, each day. How are we ever going to get out?

easily put- spend less or bring more $ in, or both.

I think Dave Ramsey should get into Congress...

I'm with you. I've gotten to that point where I don't care if they've been there for 6 months, or 6 years, as a group they are not doing their f%*&ing job and they all need to leave.
