Learning to knit and crochet
I am wanting to learn how to knit or crochet (was going to try both first to see which would be easier as I have some trouble with my arms). What would be the best way to start? I don't want to buy a ton of supplies that I will never use. I have seen a few kits for beginners that I thought I could buy and try, but not sure if those are any good.
Any suggestions would be great!

My Valentine Bookends (2~13~13, 2~15~09)
I taught myself to knit using the book 'stitch n' b*tch" I agree about needed a finished product you want. I really wanted to make 'crankypants' for my son and they are knit. With the book and some you tube videos I was set.
I had to take a quick class at a yarn store to learn crochet- I just couldn't get it. I used the 'happy hooker' book to fill in the blanks after the class.
Also - join ravelry for tons of inspiration and patterns (free and not). I am 2boymommy on there and you can see what a self-taught knitter can do!
It depends what kind of learner you are. I need to have someone show me, so a neighbor taught me to crochet, and I took a beginner knitting class at AC Moore. I needed more than a book.

I taught myself both by using You Tube. Personally I love crochet and knitting is just ehhhh. Either way, the needles/ hooks are inexpensive.
I knitted a scarf and crocheted a hat just to get the practice and they were both relatively easy for me
have fun!
