Hi from a Portland Nestie! DH and I are going to a concert in Vancouver in October. The concert is at Rogers Arena, and we have 2 free Hyatt nights so looking at staying at the Hyatt downtown. I have a few questions...
How is Rogers Arena? Is it a good venue? It seems like it's relatively new?
Can we walk from the Hyatt to good restaurants? Is that Hyatt in a decent neighborhood? I read several pages on tripadvisor and it seemed ok!
Restaurant recs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
Any must-see's?
We will most likely take the train up and then fly home, we'll be there 2-3 days.
Re: Vancouver, BC questions
At first I didn't recognize the name Rogers Arena, lol, they renamed it last year apparently, it was GM Place when I lived in Vancouver. I haven't been to a concert there but it was just fine for sports events. I think it was built in the 90s so it is new-ish.
It would be an easy walk from the Hyatt Regency, probably take 20 minutes at the most. The Hyatt Regency is in a good part of town (pretty much the whole downtown core is, it just gets a little dicey when you get to the east side/east Hastings St. - you'll be able to tell right away though if you wander too far). You can easily walk to good restaurants and sight-seeing from there. Transit in Vancouver is also easy to use.
I consider Granville Island a must-see - it is a great market for both food and crafts, there are all kinds of neat shops and artists' studios there, and often live music or street performers. My favourite is to head down to Yaletown, take the Aquaferry across to Granville Island, wander around looking at everything and then get some food from the market and eat outside looking at the water.
Stanely Park is also popular - the Aquarium there is great too. I've done art walks in Vancouver which are pretty nice, if you want to generally see the downtown. Gastown and Chinatown (and the Chinese Garden) are also pretty cool. If you like museums, the Museum of Anthropolgy on the UBC campus has always been one of my favourites.
If you like sushi, definitely fit in a meal while you are there - Vancouver has tons of fantastic sushi restaurants, (recs would have to depend on your budget).
I agree with everything the previous poster said.
You can also take the sky train (subway) to get around downtown and to the airport.
Rogers Arena is good for concerts for an indoor/arena venue.
I don't tend to eat downtown so I can't help you out too much on that note.
Get up to Grouse Mountain if you can (can access on transit). There are great views of the city from there and it won't be too snowy yet in October.
Feel free to PM any more specific questions.
