Paper Straws? Can you drink out of them?

I saw some old fashioned paper straws on a birthday party blog. they were in old fashioned coke bottles.

I assume they are made of water proof type paper?  I am confused by the name, paper straws.

Has anyone ever used them?

My grandparents always kept some around when we grandkids were little.  There's some sort of coating on them that keeps them together (maybe think like wax paper, but I don't know for certain).  It's what people used for years and years before plastic.

This brand is best. There is a brand on Amazon that does not have the wax coating and they do collapse in water...pretty ridiculous.

FYI: Williams Sonoma has the straws you linked in store in red for $7.00 a box.

I think some of them have a coating similar to what's inside cardboard milk cartons or ice cream/soup pints.

Yep, there is a coating in and on the paper to make it waterproof.  So says the former papermaker that did well in her coating class.

Yes, i used these straws for my daughters' birthday party.  We had an old fashioned picnic and used them to drink lemonade from mason jars. They are sturdy and  they hold up long enough to drink a drink without getting soggy...
