Embroidery Machine Recommendation?

MH just dropped $700 on a hunting bow and accessories so I'm trying to see if we can drop a little bit of money one my hobby.

Right now I'm borrowing my mom's Brother sewing machine and I would love to have one of my own. I also want to do embroidery for my LO so a machine that does both would be ideal.

I was looking at the Borther SE400 because of the rating on amazon.com

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Re: Embroidery Machine Recommendation?

  • I have a Brother SE-350. It's essentially the same machine, but the 350 utilizes cards and the 400 has a USB port. The USB port is a mjaor benefit. I think it's a good into machine, but the embroidery feature feels somewhat primitive to me. It's okay for getting your feet wet. The maximum size hoop it'll take is a 4"x4".

It has a lot of cool features, and some nice stitch functions. I appreciated the bobbin notification, thread cutter, needle threader, and start stop button. It's an easy to use machine.

I do a lot of sewing, and I killed my 350 in just over a year. I keep it as a backup machine when my Babylock is being serviced, but I'm not really pleased with it. Many of the functions like the needle treader, thread cutter, bobbin winder, and bobbin notification no longer work. Even after being serviced, it has tension issues.  I realize that a hobbyist who only uses this machine occasionally would obviously not put as much strain on it, so take my review with a grain of salt. It's a good budget machine, but don't expect it to be a forever machine. Much like cheaper models, it's constructed primarily with plastic and nylon parts that will eventually break and strip over time.

  • BTW, I upgraded to a Babylock Esante. I was hesitant to buy another machine made by Brother after my SE-350 died, but the difference in quality has been night and day. I LOVE my Esante.
  • I do pretty heavy sewing too and have had my HE-240 (essentially the same machine) for 3 years. To be honest, it's served me well, but if you can save up a little more or just spring for a little nicer machine, you won't regret it. I really want to upgrade, especially for the embroidery aspect.
She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I have the brother SE 350. As Steph said there is only one different between the two. Aside from my bitterness that the SE 400 came out five minutes after I bought the SE 350, I do love the SE350 and I think you'd love the SE400.

Again, as Steph said, it's a great machine for the hobbiest. I use mine more than a few times a month since I bought it 18 months ago and I don't have any issue with it at all. I use it for pretty much what you do, little girl dresses in addition to dresses for me.

It's not a forever machine but I have no doubt it will last me ten years.

I seldomly use the embroidery function only because of the card issue. If it had the USB like the 400, I would use it all the time. It's very easy to use and self explanatory.

I'd recommend the machine to anyone who will be putting 10-20 hours a week in on a sewing machine with average home sewing projects. It even worked great on the wool coat I made for my daughter. But if you think you'll be using it daily, then I would definately look at an upgrade, especially if you're willing to drop what your husband did on hunting stuff.

But if you think the machine will fit your needs, I'd just put some of the extra cash into a serger. hehehe

  • Thanks for all the info ladies. I'm hoping to drop as much has what my husband did. I'm trying to show him the savings we would have if I did it myself as opposed to paying someone else to do it for me.
