What would be good to set between hostas?
We have a very shady yard and would like to line the front with hostas and something else colorful. So it would be hosta, colorful plant, hotsa..etc. Any ideas?
Re: What would be good to set between hostas?
Don't do the every other plant thing. Just don't. If you're going to mix Genera, group your plants in 3s or 5s, not a straight line of alternating.
You could use some ferns. Huechera (as NB mentioned), or Pulmonaria.
If you don't mind using annuals, Hypoestes, impatiens, and begonias can add color in shady areas.
Thanks girls! I'm so clueless when it comes to gardening!!
Have you heard of Lenten Roses? I had saw them in a nursery last March, and grabbed one. It's exotic and beautiful in a strange way, like something out of the children's book Jumanji. They are called that because they will push up through the snow and flower as early as March. Mine stopped blooming by May, but other things had come up by then. They're nice because they fill in the spaces between hostas until they come up in April around here. The foliage is still dark green and pretty, even with this heat wave we've had, and no rain for about 3 weeks.
Here's a southern living picture of some:

At my old house, I tucked impatiens in with my hostas after I divided them and needed some filler. One year I did sharp orange and magentas; the next pale pink, lavendar and white. I also had some ferns interspersed and behind. They were strung along and old iron fence.
