Tell me what you love about NC!

Hi ladies

I may have the opportunity, in the next few months, to take a job in Asheville.  I am excited for the chance to get out of CT, but have never been to NC.

What do you like about living here?
What don't you like?
How's the weather?
What's the job market like (for my H)?
How about housing?  Is it expensive to live there (probably not as bad as CT)?
Anything else I should know?

Thanks!  Looking forward to chatting with all of you!

Re: Tell me what you love about NC!

  • What do you like about living here?  Well, I'm in Raleigh, so I really like that the beach and mountains aren't too far away.

What don't you like?  Nothing really, and I've lived in various parts of NC my whole life. I went to college in the mountains and loved it.

How's the weather?  Right now.. hot. On average, it's not so bad. The winters are fairly mild compared to many other states. Asheville will get more snow than Raleigh though.

What's the job market like (for my H)? Not sure about the Asheville area.

How about housing?  Is it expensive to live there (probably not as bad as CT)?
Anything else I should know? Not sure about Asheville housing, but I guess it just depends on what you're looking for. Asheville is a mountain city/town that I would consider moving too, and there aren't too many of them. :)

  • We live in the Triad, so we are about 3 hours to the beach or the mountains. I love the weather, we get a lot less snow than PA/MD. However Asheville does get more snow than the piedmont.

I would assume housing would be cheaper.

Asheville is a cute town and we enjoy visiting there.

    What does your husband do?

What don't I like, all the Tar Heel fans, but not much I can do about that.

  • I'm from CT, too! I like the lower cost of living and the warmer temps. I don't like when it does snow (which happens more than the natives are willing to admit) because the state basically shuts down. I also don't like dook fans, but fortunately Tar Heel fans greatly outnumber them. As far as Asheville, I've heard the job market is tough because it's a very desired area to live in. So it's good you have a job, but it could be tough for your DH, depending on what he does. For NC/Southern standards, Asheville is considered a more expensive area to live in, but when you compare it with CT it should be a lot cheaper. I LOVE Asheville and it's a place we've considered living (but the job/housing situation right now isn't good). It's a beautiful area, lots to do, lots of culture, etc. The one thing I would definitely not like about living there is the distance to the beach, it's probably 6+ hours to the closest beach from there. Good luck!

  • I live in Raleigh and I love it.  The short drive to the beach is great, and the drive to the mountains is relatively short too.

I'm sure from CT you will feel that they cost of living here is less.  I have a friend that is from Asheville and she said it's a little more expensive in Asheville than Raleigh.

Asheville has cooler temps then othe parts of NC and I know a lot of people love that.

Asheville is a VERY liberal town.  Personally DH and I wouldn't want to live there....EVER.  I'd advise you to visit before moving.

  • Thanks all!  These are all great tips/suggestions.  I really appreciate the answers!

Jenna - H and I are quite liberal, so that would be OK with us.  Big Smile

  • We love the BBQ, the Sweet Tea, the beaches, the mountains, the college football and college basketball seasons, and warm weather late into the fall and early in the spring.

  • Bella....Me and my DH currently live an hour outside of Boston, and I'm trying to talk him into moving to NC, preferably the Asheville area.  We spent a weekend there a few years back, and it is a nice area.  It will have a lower cost of living than the New England area, but maybe higher than other parts of NC.  From my research so far, the job market is tough.

I see you're almost a pastry chef, where are you going to school?  I've thought about going to school for that, just not sure if I have the talent or patience :)

    Good luck!

  • We are NC natives that moved to CO for a while & just (last week) moved back! We've always lived in the mountains of NC, but in a tiny little town near the TN line. We're moving to the Asheville area now so we can be closer to a city.

What do you like about living here? Southern hospitality & traditions. I also love having mountains & beach in the same state.
What don't you like?  The humidity, but that isn't as big of an issue in the mountains.
How's the weather?  We have all 4 seasons, which I love. After spending the fall, winter & spring being constantly hammered with snow storms in CO, I'm very much looking forward to a "normal" winter.
What's the job market like (for my H)? What does he do? Asheville is a college town.
How about housing?  Is it expensive to live there (probably not as bad as CT)? The southeast in general is cheaper than the rest of the country. There are certainly places in Asheville where you could break the bank, but overall I think there are some very affordable neighborhoods.
Anything else I should know? Not off the top of my head. If you want to know something, just ask!

    Welcome to the board!

  • I'm a bit late here but I live in Asheville so I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

What do you like about living here? We've moved around a fair bit in the past 5 years but I can honestly say that Asheville is my favorite place we've lived. Aside from the fact that the mountains are gorgeous, I really enjoy all the people I've met and the overall vibe of the city. It can be a little "crunchy" here but DH and I enjoy that.

What don't you like? There's certainly a lack of diversity here compared to other places we've lived.

How's the weather? It's been quite hot lately but I think the weather in Asheville is milder compared to other areas of NC. We've only been here since December but were familiar with the area before and you definitely seem to get all four seasons here.

What's the job market like (for my H)? The job market here is a bit tough (like anywhere else). Most people will advise you not to move here without having jobs lined up in advance, though I suppose some of it depends on the industry you're in.

How about housing?  Is it expensive to live there (probably not as bad as CT)? I think the overall cost of living is very reasonable. We're originally from MD, right outside of DC, so compared to there it's significantly less expensive. I think the only place we've lived that had a lower cost of living was Nashville, TN. We currently rent a house so I can't speak to the costs of owning a home but I can say that we rent a 3 bed, 2 bath home for less than what we paid in rent for a 1 bedroom apt back in MD.

Anything else I should know? If you haven't been here before you should definitely come visit and check out the area. There's a lot of tourism here so it can get a bit hectic in the summer/fall. If moving to Asheville looks like a serious possibility, I'd be happy to try to answer any other questions you might have.

What do you mean by "crunchy".  I'm trying to talk DH into moving to NC.  I prefer Asheville, but we might end up in Charlotte (more jobs available).

    Thanks!

  • What do you like about living here?  Everything!! We live in one of the tiny surrounding cities because it's so much cheaper than renting or owning directly in AVL. The food, the adventurous spirit of the people here, the outdoor activities (we kayak, hike and mountain bike a lot), the pet friendly vibe of so many especially landlords, all the breweries and beer friendly folks, having all 4 seasons and the laid back friendly attitudes most people here seem to have.
What don't you like?  The lack of diversity among people and the
How's the weather?  This summer and the the last few winters have been harsh. But if CT is anything like I've heard it's nothing to worry about.
What's the job market like (for my H)? Iffy, but it really depends on what he wants to do or has done. I moved here from the west coast and found a job very quickly.
How about housing?  Is it expensive to live there?  like just about everyone else I agree it's the most expensive county in the state to live within but a lot of million dollar vacation homes people have stashed in the mountains will do that to any area.
Anything else I should know? There are so many touristy things to check out that once you've figured out how to get them all you've had a great opportunity to see the area and decide where you want to live or hang out in AVL or around it.

Crunchy is just another way to say environmental friendly, but usually "crunchy" people take it to a more extreme level. For instance, Seattle would be considered a "crunchy" city b/c they provide each home with a compost bin along with the trash & recycling bins.

I've also heard people refer to hippies as "crunchy", but I don't think you necessarily need to be a hippie to be friendly to the environment.

I agree with Shoeaholic's response to your question. I usually use "crunchy" as sort of a blanket term for any place where people care about the environment and focus on issues like local foods, etc. There are definitely hippies here but no where near like it was in the Pacific NW- we moved to Asheville from Eugene, OR.

You're definitely right about the job market though. I think it can be tricky to find a job here depending on the industry you're in.
