What SUV will fit 3 kids and a double stroller?

My friend's trying to register for her upcoming twins and find a new car too, and I told her I'd throw it to the nest to find out....she would like the captain's chairs in the front and a 3rd row, and preferably not a minivan....the main reason behind the anti-minivan is that she said she can't fit a double stroller in the back?  Any input is appreciated

The new Explorer has the option of captain's chairs (which we got, and regret by the way) in the 2nd row and then the fold down 3rd row seat. I'm not sure if a double stroller would fit in the back with the seat up, but maybe.

my friend has an Acadia and her 3 girls plus the double fit perfectly.

we have a Pilot.  we have grace in the middle in her booster seat and the boys on either side in the snugrides. 

FTR: it actually fits 2 double strollers in the trunk.  we had the quattro tour double and the snap n go and still had room.

She can't fit a double stroller in the back of a minivan? I'm surprised. Most people buy a minivan for that reason. My double stroller fits no problem.

That being said, if she doesn't want to go the minivan route, my friends that have 3+ kids drive the following: Yukon Denali, Escalade, Suburban and Hummer. I find those to be too big for me which is why we went the minivan route.

We also all went to Myrtle Beach together for a week.  She not only fit the double but also an umbrella stroller, hubby's golf clubs, cooler, beach chairs, two suitcase, beach toys and two beach bags filled with towels.  I have a RAV4 and also fit my double in the back just fine.  I do not have the third row so it would not be an option for your friend..only fits the two kids in the back row.

IMO, the cars that harriet listed are overkill (nothing personal, but you know that .  you really don't need a bus for 3 kids.

it sounds like, if anything, she needs a different double stroller.  out of all of my friends i have the largest double and it still fits.

I have a Yukon Denali. It has the captains chair with the third row. However, I still haven't attempted to jam a double stroller in the back with half the 3rd row up. I'm too scared to see what happens. With a full 3rd row up, there is absolutely no cargo space unless you have the XL.  Maybe I should test it today....

Oh, I know they are total overkill - these are people that want TONS of room in the trunk and have 3 or more kids and refuse to drive a minivan. Those cars do have that........I feel like you're driving a monster truck with those options! LOL!

wait, is she trying to put the twins in 1 row, her other kid in another row and then all her crap in the back?  because if she is she either needs one of those awful expeditions or needs to just put the kids in 1 row and save the back row for when she has more passengers.  we put all 3 kids in 1 row every day, it's not a big deal.

FTR, if that is what she's doing she's not going to be happy no matter what car she gets.  getting kids into the 3rd row of any car is a PITA.  the only "easy" option is a mini-van.

This is true. Even with my minivan, it's a pain to have to climb into the back, but much easier than an SUV.

i used to love the idea of a hummer but OMFingG, WTF was i thinking?  lol.

i'm sure this is going to bring up that whole "too much car" thing again but i've never seen anyone justifiably drive one of those gigantic SUVs unless they were a contractor or had some other business hauling equipment.  anything beyond that you just have unrealistic expectations.

We have the pilot and I love it, but the storage with the 3rd row up is nill- and no captains chairs- however with the 3rd row down- it has a ton of room and fits loads of stuff-

our next car will be something- not sure what- but I am praying I can avoid a mini van-

Hmmm... you seem to be asking a lot of questions for "friends" about things regarding a third child! It really depends. I have friends (here in the city) who comfortably fit 3 kids plus double stroller in civics, corolla's, etc because they don't want to park a larger vehicle. Most suburban moms I know  insist that once you have that third kid you will need a minivan or larger SUV. We hope to have a third kid and will do our best to avoid a huge vehicle. We're looking to buy a new (or new to us) car next year when DH graduates and we leave the city and wagons are at the top of our list followed by smaller SUVs (CR-V is our top for that). With the right carseats you can easily fit three kids in most cars or small SUVs (the Rav4 is an exception because the way the seatbelts are routed you can't safely put three people in back). If you need to have space to fit more than two parents and three kids regularly then you'll need a minivan or SUV with a third row though.

She will have newborns which will go in the captain's chairs, and then a son the same age as Madison who can get himself in/out of the 3rd row without any help at all.

You are right...I *hope* to be in the same situation as her (however, minus the twins part) soon!  I figured I'd throw it to the nest and be able to help her, and then modify it for me later down the road

Ah, gotcha! Yeah, I think with the right stroller and the right carseats just about any vehicle will work for a family of 5. She may need to consider what carseats to get if she wants to get three across. car-seat.org has a HUGE post (several hundred "replies") with three across solutions for almost any car.

IMHO, tell your friend to suck it up and check out the extended versions of minivans.

Most have extra deep trunks which can easily accomodate strollers- including doubles. FWIW, my bumbleride double fits easily in our trunk with the back row up. We have a Kia Sedona w/two capts seat and a traditional third row.
