SCORPIONS...

Who else has them and what do you do about it?  Right now we just hunt them at night with a black light and smash them with a garden shovel.  I'm thinking there has to be a more effective way to keep them away!  We've now hired a bug guy to spray and hopefully take their food supply away.

I've heard that scorpions are impossible to get rid of, but if anyone has done the impossible...I'd love to hear about it and any tips you might have!  We've been at our new house for almost a month and I didn't find one until last week (in the family room, yikes).  Now we actively look for them and generally find between 1 and 13 in our yard at night.  I check inside every night also and haven't found any since then.  HELP, please!  We have a small dog and don't want her to get stung.

Re: SCORPIONS...

  • we have a huge scorpion issue as well. we live at the base of a mountain, have grass and palm trees so those all work against us lol. my husband does the same thing yours does, he's actually become pretty obsessed with looking for them. you're doing it right, killing off their food supply but they are SO hard to get rid of. you can get some food grade diatomaceous earth to sprinkle around the outside of your house, it takes them a little while to die after ingesting this but it works, and is safe for your dog. you can also have your house completely sealed (it's pretty expensive i believe, about 600-800 ish?). you can also seal the cracks in your cement outside, like where the house and cement meet if you know what i mean. basically anywhere like that they like to hang out you want to discorage it. if there are leaky pipes outside (water spout, etc) fix those too, they love moisture

  • Thanks!  Do you have to order the food grade diatomaceous earth?  Or is it available at the Home Depot or other stores around the Valley?  I was trying to google where to buy it in Phoenix and all I could find were places to order it from online.

  • Yeah I agree with PP, DE --  diatomaceous earth, is pretty inexpensive and helps a ton. You can get it at the pool store. We have a DE pool filter so we use that and killed off their food supply. Good luck!
  • I agree with PP. Pick some up at the pool store. That will work fine!

Also I LOVE my pest control guy. I would totally have my cable and internet shut off before I stopped having him come. We have him come every 3-4 weeks to kill off all the bugs. We have yet to see any bugs in our new house and at the old house we didnt have a problem with Scorpions at all...  I hate those things!

who is your best guy would love a rec!

  • We use jitterbug pest solutions (623-544-6336). They are based here in Surprise but I am sure they travel a bit as there are a few techs that work for them. I actually got the rec from another nestie (who doesnt post anymore) when I moved out here 2 years ago and have been using them ever since. Lyn and Bob are great.

I pay $45/month but they go based off of the size of your house / yard. So if you call her she'll ask you some questions about your house.  They will also come back out (at no extra charge) if there is a problem so it's not like they leave you hanging after you spray. We have them come every month (every 3 weeks in the summer) and they are just amazing people. I love love love them so much! They don't BS you either and are great to work with. Lyn actually cat sits for us occassionally. She will be doing so when we go away next month too!

  • We did the impossible!  When we moved into our home, it was infested! There were 3 dead scorpions and 2 live ones inside the house (hadn't been lived in for over a year) and our first night out blacklighting we found over 30 in our front and back yard.  Here's what we did:

    1) Diatomaceous earth around the base of plants

    2) Blacklight/hornet spray every chance we get (less scorpions = less babies to repopulate)

    3) Deltamethrin (best product ever invented) - buy it at a weed and pest store in concentrate (very $$ but ah-ma-zing and cheaper than paying someone over time)  We mix it up and spray it around the exterior every month, interior every 3 months.  Eventually eliminated the need for #1.

Since we started the deltamethrin, we've gone blacklighting several times and have found maybe 2 or 3 total scorpions.  Not a single one in the house since we started spraying.  It took us about a year to get to this point, but my paranoid self finally doesn't check the bedsheets anymore!!

That's so reassuring!  We called the bug guy and have been using DE in what had been the biggest problem areas.  We only find 1 (if any) outside at night now and it gives me ideas of where to put more DE.  We'll keep this up for about a year (and keep the bug guy forever!) and hopefully the one I saw in the house will be the only one I ever see inside.  Fingers crossed!
