What is the nickname "Opie" or "Opey" or however it's spelled short for?  Or is that the full name?

Opie could be a nn for Opal or Ophelia.

  • Molly, I'm sorry about Desmond's lack of birthday planning skills and even more so about his refusal to do the specific things you ask for.  Hopefully he'll change his ways and give you a marvelous surprise sometime!

Alaska is on our short list for the next vacation - it seems gorgeous.

How is the New Zealand trip planning going?

Very well!  We have our first week of tracks/huts and hostels booked!  Now we just have to plan the last 2 weeks. :-)

We realized though that we leave for Grand Teton/Yellowstone in 4 weeks and hadn't solidified our Yellowstone hiking route or rented a car yet - so I think we have to focus on that and then we'll return to NZ planning when we get back. :-)

That trip is going to be amazing!

I agree with this.  That is a bummer he wasn't more into the planning and fun of a birthday. :-(

I feel like Opie is more a nickname for a really white guy - like a ginger or a towhead - or just a white nerdy dude.  I'm not sure though.

I just got off the phone with a guy named "Opie" and started thinking 'what the heck is that short for?'

It can be a full name.  It was on H's name list for a bit.  Indifferent

I agree too.  Sorry that he doesn't make this a priority.

  • Juli, I forgot about the other trip you have coming up.  How fun!
  • Someone calls Andy "Opie" but I can't remember who at the moment.  It might be some coworkers.

He also got the nickname "Shrimp" from his old coworkers (when he weighed about 70 pounds more).

    He hated/hates both nicknames. :-P

  • Our first renters' lease is almost up!  We are thisclose to making it our first full year as landlords with basically zero (huge) problems.  Party!!!

Annnnnnd, our renters asked if they could sign a new 6 month lease.  We're pretty excited since we were expecting them to be gone on August 31st.

    That's great news!

  • I am kind of furious right now.  Another one of my textbooks arrived and it is NOT as the seller described.  I'm also pissed because the book hasn't yet been marked shipped so I'm not able to leave feedback.  The more I stew, the worse the review gets.  If the book had been accurately described, I wouldn't have bought it.  It is acceptable and I guess I should just be glad for the $40 savings.

I am so tempted to begin the review with "THIS SELLER LIES ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THEIR BOOKS.  Do not buy from them!"  The only reason I wouldn't is fear of being way overdramatic.

  • For all of you saying you'd like to go to Alaska: if you book a cruise and want to see whales, plan to go this time of year.  My parents are 1/2 way through their trip, and the postcards they've sent the kids are full of whale news.  Henry even noticed, "there are a lot of Ws on this card!"

Mol, I'm so sorry about the lack of bday enthusiasm from Des.  Jim's family never made a big deal out of birthdays, so he was confused about my perspective.  Over time, we're getting there.  Hope the same happens for you.

Diana, the world of buying books online is filled with inaccurate sellers.  I'm sorry your first round of books aren't how you wanted them.  That's a bummer.

  • So, I met Tigers' Aunt and Grandma this weekend. Tigers, you look so much like your aunt!  Especially with her camera in hand!  And sweet, sweet grandma.

Yeah, it's not surprising.  It's just rotten to feel lied to.  It's one thing to mislead or be vague, but another thing altogether to explicitly state things that aren't true.  The lack of integrity (particularly in a law student) is very upsetting!

  • I got a reply to the email that I sent Justin Amash last week.  Reading it raised my blood pressure.

I disagree with pretty much everything he believes in.

  • I know.  My first textbook (which was reported to be in new condition) came with a rainbow of highlighter.  At first I thought the previous reader was just being cute, but then I noticed that they highlit (?) nearly every paragraph, and probably needed to use the next one in the pack.

  • Kasa, sorry about your unsatisfactory response from Amashole ;)

I am deeply distressed by the resolution of the "debt ceiling crisis."  See my comments wishing for economic apocalypse over a "compromise" that didn't include any provisions to raise revenue.  At this point, I'm moving back to burying my head in the sand--my heart just can't take hearing about it, I'm so disappointed.

The good news is that now I'm seriously considering volunteering to get involved with Senator Stabenow's campaign.  Several of the WSU professors are pretty involved with the MI Democrats, so finding out how to do more should be easy.  Hoekstra's decision to run against her sealed the deal for me.  I need to help MI's first female senator!

    No

    Boo!

How can a textbook with highlighting possibly be in "new" condition?

My other two textbooks that have arrived have been in perfect condition, as described.  So at this point, the experience has been more positive than negative.  Why is it that the negatives always stick in the craw?!

  • Okay, I really need to go do some productive things.  I really could just sit here all day and chat with all of you!

Juli, if you come back in here, it was so great to run into you on Friday night! Andy and your friends were just as charming as I thought they'd be.  :)

This would be a very interesting experience. I hope you get to do it.  And for the record, I do not find Pete to be hoektastic.

I'm glad that you wrote him.  I should have.

I'm also glad that you got a response.  That's kind of classy, and I'll bet a lot of other reps don't do response emails.

I think I remember from his campaign that Amash likes trees.  I think that's the only thing we have in common.

I'm looking for points in the "compromise" that seem compromise-y.  Not finding much.  But, at least the country's not in default.

Can we talk about G. Giffords vote?  I'm so, so, so glad that she's doing well.  She's walking and seems to know her surroundings, and looks great.  Was this her first vote back?  That seems kind of icky to me.  A little too, "the citizens are scared and pissed and are jaded against government this week, let's get Gabi to come, we'll all show support to her, and it'll put a little bow on this story."  Ew.

    Yes

    I love it!

  • GRSP, I think most Congresspeople respond to notes from constituents.  L and I sent pre-filled emails to Bill Huizenga regarding the bank/credit union bill and received pre-filled responses that addressed the topic.

I saw clips of Giffords's appearance on the floor on CNN this morning.  I am also really glad to see how well she is recovering.  It is nothing short of amazing and such a testament to her strength.  I like to think that her return was driven more by her desire to be there than by a political desire to make the whole thing more palatable.

Hoektastic, I wondered if there was a connect there.

Diana, that's great that you're thinking about volunteering!  It can be pretty challenging (depending on what you do), but also so rewarding.  I don't know yet what (if anything) I'll do in 2012.

Someone I work with held a fundraiser for Sen. Stabenow and she was in attendance.  I wanted to go, but it was the weekend that we were up north.

I submitted the message via his website, and there was a box to check if I wanted a reply.  I checked it because I thought it might mean that my note was more likely to get read.

It was a pretty lengthy reply though, which I give his office credit for.

And yes, I belive this was Giffords first vote.  I'm also glad she's doing well!

  • Diana, you're probably right: she wanted to be there.  I know she's not a puppet, but it was a little too theatrical for me to not be cynical.
