Re: something keeps eating ALL of my potted tomatoes. what can i do

  • Do you mean the fruits or the leaves/stems are getting eaten?

Chipmunks & squirrels used to take 1 bite out of my red ripe tomatoes and leave the rest. Found out it was because they were thirsty. I put out a bowl of fresh water every day for them, problem solved! Also, if your fruits have even a hint of color change going on, you can pick them early and ripen them on the counter. They don't need to be on the plant at that point.

If your plants are being eaten, it could be any number of things, deer, groundhogs, bunnies, hornworms, etc. I'd look into fencing options (my uncle swears by electric) to keep the animals out, and do a search & squish mission for hornworms/slugs/other bad bugs.

    Good luck!

  • The squirrels ate all of my pears and are now working their way through my tomatoes.  They don't just take a bite.  They gradually eat the entire tomato if I don't catch them quick enough.  I know that it is squirrels because I have seen them in the act.

I'm not really having any luck.  I've tried Liquid Fence, but will spray it again.  My neighbor says that his dog keeps the squirrels away from his (but not the chipmunks).

Last year, I think it was Kastle, who suggested taking the plastic shell containers that berries come in and placing them over your tomatoes to protect them.  I personally have too much fruit to do that, but if you only have a few plants it may work.

  • I've had a problem with groundhogs eating our veggies this year.  I filled a spray bottle with water and added a few drops of really hot hot sauce to it.  Shake it up and spray everything.  It's worked for me.  Just remember to wash the veggies before eating them!
