My BIL's birthday is this weekend and he told me he wants a surprise cake. There is no flavor he does not like. The only requirements are that it has to be a decent flavor for cakeballs, so something that goes well with white or dark chocolate and can not have coconut or kiwi.
Inspiration is proving illusive right now, so I am putting it to you girls. Any delicious recipes you've seen and wanted to try or tried and loved recently?

Re: I Need Cake-spiration!
No recipes in particular, but I've been wanting to try lemon cakeballs w/ white chocolate... and strawberry ones w/dark chocolate.
I know that's pretty basic, lol, but yeah.. craving them big time.
I made this almond cake recently:
http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/05/almond-raspberry-layer-cake/
It was really good, and had a nice strong almond flavor. I made it with cherry frosting, but Deb made it with chocolate, and I have been wanting to make it again with vanilla bean frosting, so I think it could go well with either.
ETA: I once made vanilla cakeballs mixed with peanut butter frosting and dipped them in milk chocolate coating (and stirred some peanut butter into that also). They weren't the prettiest things, but they were really delicious.
I just got a recipe for a margarita cake. I'm not sure what kind of icing it calls for, though. If you are interested I will FB you the recipe later tonight.
Lemon was my first thought also. Either of these sound delish.
With All the Trimmings
Just do it!
CAKE IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS
Ok, that's all I have. Otherwise, everything sounds great.

As I was reading I was thinking peanut butter. Then Anna said it first, so I second her!
Also, I had a friend telling me about 'cake balls' but with Oreo's and cream cheese frosting in the middle. They would be delicious with white, milk, or dark chocolate on the outside.
I'm with Brianna - heh, makes me think I should go read that story again.

It kind of got me thinking about cakeballs with chocolate cake with some sort of mock cookie dough inside, dipped in chocolate. I also though about merging cake and cheesecake in a cakeball. Your cookies/cream cheese combo made me remember these ideas. Hmmm....
I think I gained 5 pounds just reading this.
I'm sure you've seen this, but Bakerella actually has a "How-To" for cheescake balls!!!! I don't decorate anything nearly as beautifully as she does, but I'm always inspired to at least try.....

I love love love almond cake with lemon, its one of my faves.
fitnessista has a vegan choc chip cookie dough that you can eat raw since its vegan.
I made some of these recently and they weren't that great. I thought they would be but we were pretty disappointed. I have heard good things about strawberry and white chocolate though!
Wait, there's a problem with this? Beacuse I don't see it!
Seriously though... I've seen some really pretty rainbow cakes online, and I was thinking about that before I read the cakeballs part. However, I think it could make pretty cake balls. You start with some white mix and then use the gel die. White chocolate and rainbow sprinkles... so pretty. But probably not ideal for your BIL...
I second the oreo idea above!
And also, cheesecakeballs sound to-die-for. If they're successful, I'd barter with you for some. Like, barter some specific green paper if that was what you wanted to trade.... wink wink.
Just reread my post and realized I am absolutely no help at all - but now I want some cake.
What's the problem with raw cookie dough? Do you know how often I buy cookie dough, but never make one single cookie with it? lol Its SO good! I prefer it over the cookie. Brownie batter is the same way.

Ms Lynch, I'm the same as you. I keep Pillsbury dough in the freezer, and when I'm in the mood for a "cookie" I'll grab a chunk of dough. I used to bake a couple at a time, but then realized I loved the dough more than the cookie! I knew about the eggs, but I have eaten so much cookie dough in my lifetime and never gotten sick from it, so I'll just keep on until I quit being lucky.
Back to the topic at hand... some ice creams have cookie dough in them - how do they do that without making people sick? Maybe a recipe like that would work for the cake balls.
I've eaten a LOT of cookie dough, never gotten sick once. Maybe my stomach is used to it. Here is a cookie dough cake ball (well truffle actually) recipe I just googled. No eggs!

It's more-so for kids... you don't want them to eat raw eggs.

I spoke with MIL yesterday and she placed her vote for cheesecake and chocolate. She made a good point that cheesecake is my BIL's favorite dessert, so I will be making those.
A few weeks ago my BIL was teasing me about wanting an Eiffel Tower stand for cake balls for his b-day party, or so I thought. He wasn't teasing, so tonight I have to make an Eiffel Tower out of some material that will hold cake pops. I'm thinking floral foam...
I will let you guys know how this turns out!
Mnkate - Sticky, Chewy, Messy, Gooey is to date my favorite cookbook of all time. I bought it for my grandmother and my mom for their birthday's last year. I should have known to look there for inspiration!
The eggs in store bought cookie dough are pasteurized so it reduces the chances of getting salmonella....but it can still happen.
If you make cookie dough from scratch, it is much more dangerous to eat it uncooked.
Tiffany has this receipe!
