Recommendations for SF eats
I'm not a regular here, but I'm looking for some local advice for inexpensive-moderately priced places to take some friends who are visiting in a month or so. I've moved to Santa Cruz this year, so I'm not as familiar with the SF area. We'll probably be exploring quite a few areas, so geographically we're not too restricted.
Vietnamese, good Vietnamese sandwiches?
Great clam chowder?
Best Japanese, sushi options?
Any particular recommendations for Chinese restaurants?
Moderately priced Italian?
TIA
Re: Recommendations for SF eats
Are you looking for SF proper only, or outside the city too? I know some good places in the East Bay but not sure if you're interested in going outside of the city.
Joy Sushi in San Mateo is pretty good and reasonably priced.
My favorite Vietnamese place for pho and sandwiches is Vietnam Village in San Bruno. It's in this little shopping complex and doesn't look like anything special but it's mm mm good.
Clam chowder...I'm a native Bostonian so admittedly am a total snob about this but IMHO the Bay Area doesn't have any worthwhile clam chowder (at least not of the New England variety; I don't do Manhattan).
I used to like going to Kitaro in the Richmond district for sushi when I lived in the city. It's cheap for sushi but still yummy. Ebisu used to be stellar, but I'm not sure anymore what the best places are.
For Chinese, R&G Lounge in Chinatown for a restaurant experience, D&A Cafe in the Richmond for more casual and comfort fare.
I have a soft spot for Steps of Rome in North Beach.
You all know you're welcome to come out for a Boston GTG any time!
