Work vent -ugh-

So I work at a university, and I am the video production coordinator for the school.

Well, the director of communications refuses to use our department for their video work (a long lasting clash between our director and theirs) and she's always hired outside groups to do work we're completely capable of. Lately, she's actually been using us -yay!-

Not anymore though. She just hired her own video person, and I'm pretty upset about that anyway. I'm very qualified (seriously? I worked the super bowl and for the redskins as a video editor but I'm not good enough for a freaking school? you've got to be kidding) but she isn't even giving me the opportunity to edit these videos. She hired her own person and is taking the projects over from me.

So it's bad enough-- until I find out that I know this person. We used to be friends in high school. We reunited last year when he started working as an intern at one of my freelance gigs. I was a producer, and he was an intern... and he wasn't even good but he was certainly full of himself. FI also worked on the same gig and he told this guy that if he's going to be arrogant he needs to have the skills to back it up, and he doesn't... and FI is not one to hurt people's feelings, just this kid is that annoying.

He's not very good at this stuff, and he's very irritating... and now he's got the job and is taking my work away from me. When my boss met him, the second he walked out of the room he said "is this guy a little full of *** or completely full of ***?" My boss(manager, not director) said we should let him take the work so she can see how crappy he is, which I can get behind, but I'm still just feeling really insulted over all of this.

I've been waiting 2 years for a chance to show this lady what I'm made of, in hopes that she may hire me under her umbrella some day (a lateral move, but well worth it since my director is a douche) and I finally got my shot and it's being taken away from someone I know isn't as good :(

Re: Work vent -ugh-

  • oh Brea, I'm so sorry! That is definitely a frustrating situation. It sounds like people see right through him though, so I'm sure it is only a matter of time before the stubborn communications woman wakes up and comes crawling to the true talent (you!).
  • That's for sure insulting!! That's really bad management on her part to hire when there's already someone on the books.  But he's right, let him do his crappy work and then you can swoop in behind and be the hero :)  Maybe you can eventually take her job too! hah!
  • I can so relate with this - I work in IT and our director (who is an uber-douche) has been a huge fan of contractors since he started.  He just has no idea what he is hoping to get accomplished and even though I have a staff of 8 people under me who are completely able to do anything these contractors are doing - he still wants to use them.

Luckily, I work for a government agency, so our jobs are safe, but it's just so frustrating and ridiculous to see them paying contractors so much more $$ when they have a full staff who can do all of the work.  Ridiculous.

I hope your situation gets better, from what I have seen in my career, usually people who suck are recognized pretty quickly - unless they sit in a directors chair.  :)

  • Haha I LOVED the last line of that.

He's pretty much a disaster. I went down there earlier to get some footage from him and learned very quickly that he's obviously never used Final Cut before (which is what he's being hired to do). He was trying to do something simple and after a minute of watching him flounder I just asked him if I could do it, and hopped in quickly and did what needed to be done.

I get back to my desk and have an email from him asking me to teach him FCP because I "seem to know my stuff."

    -eye roll-

I forwarded the email to my boss. His reaction was priceless.

  • Oh yeah, you should be the one to show him how to use FCP?  Get real guy, you took the job, time to show what you can (or cannot) do!

Stupid people drive me crazy, but especially stupid people who expect you to help cover for their lack of knowledge!!  Argh!

  • Ohh hon, so sorry you have to go through this. Soon enough they'll realize that they made a mistake you'll see, and you'll have your turn to SHINE!!! Best Wishes to you.
