Hi ladies, I have a question I hope you can help me with.
DH is in the process of interviewing for a job at the University of Houston. We are trying to be as informed as possible in the event that he is offered this job as things seem to be moving quickly.
We currently live in Corpus Christi. Because of obligations here (work/school/house) I would not be moving to Houston for a while and DH would need an apartment there. It is my understanding that the area near the university is not that great, is that accurate? What would be some good suburbs on the south side of the city to look into for housing? Mainly we are looking for an area that is clean and safe, doesn't need to have a lot of frills. Neither of us is familiar with the city (we're not native Texans) and so we're not even sure what towns to start looking in.
Any advice/tips you can provide would be appreciated! TIA.
Re: Housing options for U of Houston
The Heights is close enough to UH and is a neat neighborhood. Rayskit (poster on this board) will be able to give more info if she comments here.
Maybe the museum district. PAGAS lives in that area (or close to it if I recall) and she would know how the commute is from there to UH.
Since you are in Corpus now, will you please go to the Executive Surf Club and eat some battered fries dipped in their house tartar sauce for me? I miss that place.
Clearlake, League City, Friendswood are south...
In the city, midtown/montrose area would be less of a commute, but is more urban and possibly more expensive.
if he's just going to be looking for an apartment, maybe midtown or downtown. medical center area would be a pretty quick commute as well. they're all pretty close... and if you head south down 45, you're going to have to go a ways before you get to "desirable" suburb area.
there are pockets of well-developed neighborhoods all around downtown, midtown, the med center, etc. that might be ideal for the short term, until you guys have abetter handle on where you want to be for the long term!

Firstly, I lived on campus and just off campus for my four years at UH, so I don't have any issue with the immediate surrounding area. I always felt safe.
I would recommend midtown, Museum District (where I live now, 5 minutes from UH but the drive isn't through a nice area) or Pearland for the suburbs. I would avoid anything down 45 south because the traffic isn't good.
Good luck! I love UH
So Tasty, So Yummy
I live in the Heights, as Harmony mentioned, and there are a lot of staff adn students from UH that live here. It's literally a 5 minute commute. My husband works downtown, south of campus, and his commute is 7-10 minutes.
There are pockets of everything all around the school. You can live very close in a safe but not pretty neighborhood. You can spend a little more for less space in a very pretty neighborhood. I guess we would really need to know more about your budget and what you want as far as specs on a place.
For example, I live in a wonderful historic district full of people walking dogs and kids on bikes. It's all little bungalows and super pretty with old trees and lots of green space. 5 min commute to UH. You can rent one of the duplexes around here for $600-700/month but it's going to be a 1/1 with no real perks, probably not even a washer dryer. But there are fancy apartment complexes all around within 15 minutes from UH and they have all the perks. Then it will depend if you want to be in a kind of bar scene (Washington Corridor) or "small town in the big city" (19th St in the Heights). Those apartments are going to cost more but you'll get more...
Thanks for all of the info! We don't really know specifics yet as far as what exactly we are looking for since we are just feeling this out right now, I am guessing for a 1/1 apartment hoping to keep cost at no more than $800/mo., w/d in unit and a pool. An easy commute would be nice too.
We'll look into the areas you all mentioned and maybe that will help guide us as far as what we are looking for. Ultimately it's my husband's choice since he will be the one there most of the time.
it might be helpful to find an apartment locator service to help you out. i am going ot my office tomorrow, and will keep an eye out for specific apartments that might be good... but i have zero idea of amenities/price range!
all of the "Alexan" complexes tend to be pretty nice. there is also a med center loft-apartment building (I think Hermann Lofts? Lofts at hermann?) that would be a simple commute to UH.

Lofts at Hermann Park are lovely and would be a snap for a commute, but they run $1k+ for a 1bed/1bath, pretty much the standard for the stuff around Hermann Park/Museum District. Maybe some of the older places in midtown will be under $800.
