What age could a kid have a real camera point and shoot?

I am thinking of getting a camera for Christmas for DS but not sure about the age?[Poll]

  • I remember when I was little my mom bought me a camera but it was a kids camera. Maybe start him with one like that and see how careful he is with it.
  • A woman I used to babysit for got her son a PlaySkool camera for Christmas.  I was a real camera that took pictures and uploaded them to the internet, but it had a child friendly exterior.  It could be dropped, banged, thrown, you name it, and not break.  If DS is still young maybe that's an option?

  • He has a Vtech kids one and loved it. We never upload anything but I think he's on the edge of it being too babyish.

  • I think your DS is 8/9ish right?  If I felt he was pretty responsible and into cameras I would have no problem getting him a point and shoot.  You can get some decent inexpensive ones nowadays which should last him a few years.  I remember getting my first camera around then.

  • I think maturity and the ability to take care of belongings is a much better deciding factor than age in most things.  If he has proven with other toys/electronics that he cares for them (doesn't throw them, misplace them) then, it would be a good time to introduce an inexpensive, easy to use starter camera.

  • He has an ipod Nano he has had for 2 years. Still looks brand new. He just got an Itouch for his Bday. He also has a DS. However this would be the first time he got technology he didn't really ask for so I wasn't sure if I was crazy about the age. He just turned 8.

    I agree with this.
