I was offered a job over the phone, and am waiting for the employer to complete a background check.
In the interview, I didn't ask about salary, as I didn't feel it was appropriate at the time. I also neglected to ask when I was offered the job on the phone, although I am expecting an offer letter (not sure if it is on its way or will be send after a successful background check).
The phone call was last Thursday. Would it be appropriate to call back and ask to discuss the salary, despite the fact that I am expecting a written offer? Also, for some added background, my start date would not be until September, so there is no real urgency to get everything wrapped up.
Re: Job Offer and how to ask about salary?
I would wait until you get the written offer. It will have all of the salary/benefits information in it. Then you will have the opportunity to negotiate that salary/benefits package. But if it hasn't been brought up yet, I would just wait until you get the written offer.
Congratulations!
I actually completely disagree with the previous posters (sorry!), but as someone with 15 years in HR, I NEVER would offer a job w/out financial info, benefits, etc. That is actually pretty ridiculous, that is part of the OFFER.
If not mentioned in the offer, I would have asked. If I forgot to ask due to the excitement of an offer, I would call back.
From a company perspective, doing background checks takes time and money...if you aren't going to accept the offer or we can't come to a salary agreement, don't make me waste my time and company money.
I know it is Friday night now, but on Monday if you don't get the offer letter, call and tell them that due to the excitement of the opportunity to work with them, salary was not discussed and you feel it is an important part of the decision making.
Good luck, I hope it is everything you want!
