My DH has been interviewing with other companies and was extended an offer this afternoon!
Yay ![]()
On one of the forms he had to fill out, he had to indicate what his current salary was, as well as his desired salary. This afternoon, he received a call from the company and the HR manager left a voicemail saying she would like to extend the offer and asked him to call back. Due to being in meetings all afternoon, he didn't get the voicemail until later in the day.
Although he had previously indicated a desired salary range, he would like to be prepared to negotiate his salary should the company fall below his desired range.
Could you provide any suggestions/tips on negotiating salary offered?
Also, he likes his current job, but he is not advancing as quickly as he has hoped to (hence why he was looking at other companies). Should he use his new job offer to leverage his current job for a raise or a promotion?
Re: How to negotiate salary offer...
"I see that the offered salary is X. I was looking for more in the range of Y"
A few things to keep in mind, though. If the benefits are better, that can bridge the gap. If his opportunity for advancement is better, he may be able to settle for a slightly lower salary in return for advancing quickly. And he also has to keep the pay band in mind. He doesn't want to come in at the high end of his pay band out of the gate and have no room for raises.
I'm the type of person who leaves a job and doesn't look back. If your DH really likes his current job and wants to try and leverage, he can give it a shot. But he also has the risk of it backfiring: they can say see ya instead of working with him.
