Ha, I'm an idiot

Just a fun story...

This year we owed the state a little money in taxes.  Not much, just under $200.  I like to pay a little early (if I need to pay at all) so that I can be sure that the return is all taken care of before the deadline.  So, I mailed a check in the middle of March.  Weeks go by and they haven't cashed the check.  It gets to be April 15th and they still haven't cashed the check.

I talked to my mom about it, and she told me this has happened to them before.  It's not really a big deal, just that when the state sends the letter saying I owe them that I need to show them a copy of the check copy and a bank statement proving that I had sufficient funds at the time.  As annoying as it is, I figure that's not too bad, so I keep waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

Over the last couple weeks, I've been getting annoyed that we haven't received any letters.  I hate owing people money and it bothers me that I've got an outstanding balance that I can't get rid of.  So, I planned on getting the documents in order and then calling the state treasury to see what we can do to get this all taken care of.  So, today I brought my old checkbook to work to make a copy and then started trying to find the bank statement from back in March.

As I'm looking through the statement to see which pages I needed to print, I wanted to see where it says that there was a check out of order (where they put a little star next to the check if the previous check number was not cashed that month) and I'm not seeing one.  So I look a little harder, and yeah, they cashed my check about 4 days after I'd written it.

D'oh.  I'm so glad I figured this out before I called the treasury.

  • lol, I'm glad you got it all figured out!  And it's always nice to know that you don't owe money that you thought you would!  That sucks you've been worrying about it for months though...

  • Hahaha... I thought you were going to say that the check was still in your checkbook and that you never even mailed it.  That sounds like something that I would have done!

Glad to know they actually did receive it!! lol

Oh, I'm so glad that's not what happened!  I would have been so pissed at myself!  At least this way I can just laugh at how stupid I was.

I thought the same thing, that you found the check in the envelope still waiting to be mail. I will admit I have done that on a few occasions!  Glad everything worked out!
