the crazy raging pregnant lady

So we (myself, younger sister, mom and dad) arrived yesterday in NYC and were greeted by my older sister and her H.

As expected she announced her pregnancy immediately. Mom responded as I expected. Thrilled. she said "omg I am gonna be a gma" normally i could have held my tongue but I have been so upset this week it was kinda the final thing. I just looked at her and said "you're already going to be a gma"

Like seriously. hello! pregnant here. do i need to wear a freaking sign.

so the next few hours was like back handed compliment city. things like, "you look so great, you're getting so big" step back a minute. I have gained 4 lbs so far. I weigh 124 lbs. I still fit it all my clothes. not that i don't want to see my belly growing so i can get a little visual reassurance that everything is cooking alright but still come on.

so here i am a little crushed. trying to let it go. I know I am excited. I know dh is excited and my ILs are excited and so is my dad. But to get such a clear "whatever" from my mom really stings.   I guess all I can do is try to ignore it all and just remember I go back home on Sunday and and my sister goes back to europe.

Thanks for the vent. have a great weekend everyone.

Re: the crazy raging pregnant lady

  • Wow.  This doesn't make you a "crazy raging pregnant lady" at all.  I don't know the history here, but that was pretty insensitive of your mom and I don't blame you one bit.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

ditto this. I would be upset too!

  • After reading your post about your sister and her obvious issues with competition, this doesn't surprise me at all (sadly). Honestly, I would have said the same thing to my mom... "hello, I'm already pregnant, remember?"

Can you spend most of your time on this trip with your dad and younger sister? At least that way you'd be somewhat avoiding sort of a toxic environment. I'm sorry you have to deal with this... it really sucks. :/

  • I don't think you sound crazy at all! I would have been irritated and I do not have the pregnant hormones that you do. Any normal woman would be irritated and I would have said the exact same thing.

I'm sure everything is fine with your baby and you'll show soon, too. I'm sorry there is just negativity coming from this area of your life. Try to enjoy your vacation if possible!

  • As the case is often with my mother, she is ditzy and speaks before she thinks.  I would chalk it up to that and hopefully she is aware she upset you =(

Enjoy your time regardless, I know, easier said than done.

  • I agree with pp's about you not being crazy AT.ALL.  You have a right to be angry and upset, I would be too.  Hopefully your mom will get her head on straight and stop the backhanded compliments and comments.  If not, I hope the rest of your family will be the excited, supportive group you need around you.  Hugs!
