FRIIIIIIIIIIIIDAAAAAAY! randoms
Re: FRIIIIIIIIIIIIDAAAAAAY! randoms
So, I have a course reflection paper due tonight.
We've met for 2 weekends already, and this will be our last.
Which means the paper is really a reflection of 2/3 of the course.
I haven't started out of protest of that silliness.
Or, I'm just a horrible procrastinator.
I'll come out to play for a bit.
Just started a running to-do list of what needs to get done before school and there are some things I need to do on the computer. I see that as a good excuse for nesting.
The annoying group member finally posted her share of the project AFTER I posted that I did her part and acted hurt that I did it. Really?? I posted to you A WEEK ago about your part of the project and you never responded. I don't have time to wait around for some slacker. I'm trying to come up with a response to her that is tactful because 10% of my grade is "professionalism." Responding with "The rest of us had our parts done three weeks ago. I posted to you asking where it was. You didn't respond. Your loss." isn't very professional
When was her actual deadline, Lvila? Was it three weeks ago? Sorry... that sounds frustrating.
I deal with people missing my deadlines on a very regular basis. It's no fun.
Yesterday Jim and I were talking about Everest and the Matterhorn, and their height difference. So I googled it.
Freaking Disney. A comparrison of their rides were the first 5 sites that came up.
Well, the paper is due Tuesday so there isn't *really* a deadline for our parts being done. However, if all of your group members have their parts done, wouldn't you feel the need to hustle up with yours??? Grrroar.
Isn't Disney the center of the universe?
Actually, I have to admit to being an addict of the Everest ride at Disney.
Honestly... I'm a deadline person. I've found that when I work in groups that I (and others) need in-group deadlines, so all expectations are met. People have different ways of working on projects, and I know I need to respect the people who get their share done right after the assignment is given. If there wasn't a group deadline set, and the whole thing isn't due until Tuesday, I could/would easily be the person who set a contribution today. On the other hand, I'm a good communicator and would have responded to previous board threads - especially if my name is the title.
I think all but one of the O.G.s (original Grandwiches, hee hee) were meaty. I'm out.
No, honestly, I wouldn't. I'd get it done just before the deadline. That's how I operate.
IMO, the biggest issue here is that she waited a week to communicate back when you inquired about her progress. The lack of response is what prompted you to do her part, right?
Everyone has different ideas about what is timely completion--maybe she was planning to wrap it up over the weekend?
It sounds like there was an overall communication breakdown--no clear deadline from the group (i.e. "have all parts turned into one group member by noon on Monday so all parts can be assembled and submitted) and then slow communication back regarding where things stood.
Group projects are frustrating.
Hi GG! I hope you are feeling well and things are on track with your pregnancy.
GRSP, I lurked yesterday but didn't post much. I enjoyed your case study on J.C. and would love to see your treatment plan! What a creative person to choose. I also appreciate how this subject somewhat spans the fictional vs. real category.
I am the only granddaughter on my dad's side (out of only four grandchildren total) and can attest to the spoilage that happens to these girls.
Unfortunately for L, I'm pretty rotten :P
I agree with all of this. I've also noticed that I've become increasingly deadline-driven. I'll meet my deadline, but not by much. And if there's no deadline, that project will be pushed way down my to-do list.
But it does sound really frustrating that she wasn't communicating and responding to your posts.
So for anyone curious about the resolution my Fan #3 disaster, the electrician service call was $65. I was hoping/planning for under $100, so that was great.
I think there were a few issues going on. #1 there was a lot of excess wire that we had crammed into the outlet box and the electrician thought it was likely that a live black wire was connecting to metal which caused the short. Issue #2 was the light sockets in the light kit. Metal prongs were sticking up causing the light to trip the breaker whenever the light was turned on (this was a manufacturer issue). Issue #3 was not addressed by the electrician because I had changed it before they arrived, but I wired the wall switch incorrectly. I asked how it should have been wired and that was not how I had it, so I'm sure that was a contributing factor.
In the end no fuses were blown which is good news.
I also found out that they typically charge $65 for hanging one fan, but they would have done all three of ours for $110 (about an hour's work for them). So we came out "ahead" by $50 if you don't account for time spent (my time is currently worth $0/hour). We also learned a ton, so I'm glad for what we DIY'd. If I were still working, however, $110 is a totally worth-it price.
ETA (mostly for the benefit of Molly Jones): We had Chet's Electric out. They did the original wiring for our condo and we had them out a few years ago to put in an outlet for our garbage disposal. I've been really happy with them and their work. I also think their prices are reasonable.
This is exactly the problem. Had she said, "Oh, it's going fine. I'll have it posted on Thursday (or Friday, Sunday, whatever)" I would not have been so anxious. But I did put a thread titled "Txxx, how is the QRI coming along?" The message inside was, "Do you need any help or input from the group?" I did this because the rest of us had posted our parts two weeks prior and she didn't comment on any of those even though she was contributing to the whole class discussions. She didn't respond to the post with her name in the title, either. Since this is an online class, I can't really guage study habits/attendance/overall personality to know whether she just doesn't care or if she's a procrastinator (and I am queen of procrastination-trust me!).
Lesson learned: make deadlines within a group, even if it is a group of professionals who work within deadlines on a normal basis.
DP, I'm glad you have 3 functioning fans, and it wasn't crazy-expensive. 6 years ago, I installed an overhead light in what is now Willa's room. I still look at it sometimes and feel pride, knowing I did that.
Diana, your electrician's rates sounds great. Better than I've ever found in GR. And your project sounds like it was a great learning experience!
Even setting deadlines for status check-ins at the outset of a substantial project is a good idea (i.e. we're going to check-in at the halfway mark to make sure everyone is on pace/comfortable with the material/whatever).
Especially with an online class, the more clearly expectations are set, the happier everyone will probably be.
Totally agree. I also found the fans much more satisfying than plumbing. Really strange since I spent 6 years working in plumbing. I found plumbing to be just annoying and something I look at and think "I never want to do that again."
But every time I turn on one of these lights or fans, my chest puffs out a little
