Possible move to PHX, any advice?

I'm in Tucson, but we may be moving north. Work would be in the Glendale and Tempe areas.

Would love to know what you guys think of living up there. We don't have children yet, but would be starting the adoption process in the autumn if we both have secure jobs.

What do you guys like/dislike about the Phoenix area? TIA!

Re: Possible move to PHX, any advice?

  • Welcome to the Phoenix board!  I've seen you around the adoption board :)

I think there's a post a few down that discuss moving to Phoenix, but in general, what I like about Phoenix is that my family lives here.  LOL- this is specific to me, but it's true.  I also like that pretty much everything I'd like is available here.

Additionally the weather- I know it's hot in the summer but the rest of the year it's great.

Glendale and Tempe are kind of spaced out from each other, where were you planning on living?

  • Hi :)

Did you recently adopt? We seem to like Glendale from what we've seen. My husband doesn't think we'll like PHX at all. We're pretty laid back people. I walk to work most days and he's a triathlete and a hiker, so he's outside a lot. Too much concrete scares him I think.

I think we're most worried about the atmosphere and moving away from everyone we know and living in a place where we don't have a support system.

We're afraid of that unknown factor I guess?

  • I did!  Our daughter was born 3/29 (we took her home from the hospital) and we finalized on July 20th.

I grew up in Peoria (next to Glendale) and loved it.  I now live in Southwest Phoenix, and LOVE it. We have beautiful views of the South Mountain Range, and live in a smaller planned community with tree lined streets, but are still close to pretty much most metro area's.

Phoenix is a bit harder (but not impossible) to not use a vehicle to commute in.  We're like the largest po-dunk town in the world.  If you live close enough to your work, you can certainly walk, but most people have a bit of a commute.  Also, while we recently added light rail, it doesn't work effectively for most people alone, but a lot of people opt to do park and rides or van pools which work well.

The nice thing about Phoenix, is that while there's not one set atmosphere, the different communities set their own.  With so many master planned area's, there are distinct feels in most neighborhoods.

  • I lived in Phx for 25 years before moving away for work reasons. Tempe to me is a college town, but different than a Tucson college town. You will find older homes in Tempe and Glendale is a newer developed area (as compared to Tempe) and to me more family oriented, lots of kid activities, etc and everywhere in Glendale seems to be nicer vs driving down a wrong street in Tempe and you are all of a sudden in South Phoenix or Guadalupe. But, this again is my opinion.
