How often do you shape/cut back hedges and bushes?

I usually do mine once in late spring/early summer but they always grow back in looking all crazy.

My boxwoods have all kinds of new shoots sticking out everywhere and look terrible, not nice and round.

I have (some variety of) arborvitae next to our driveway (it doesn't have soft branches, they are very needle-like and you need thick glove when you touch it) that I cut halfway back in May and it's already grown back plus some size! (It's knee high and I filled up a whole trash can full of clippings!)

Can I cut/prune/reshape them again now?

I cut my American Boxwood hedge 3 or 4 times a year, depending on rainfall.

I rarely prune any variety of Arborvitae, and I don't know any variety that is so prickly as to necessitate gloves. Are you sure it's an Arb?
