Pet advice

Since there are so many pet owners here, I need some advice. Every day this week, I've heard a neighbor's puppy yelping at various times throughout the day. We live across a pond from them, but they're on another street. It's annoying, but I figured no biggie since it's during the day, not enough to wake the kids during naps, etc.

I assumed earlier in the week that it was just outside for a while, and wanted to go back in, but it has been increasing in frequency (and volume), and today it literally has not stopped for more than 5 minutes since I first heard it at 8-something.

Yes,, it's annoying at times, but my bigger concern is that I assume they're leaving it outside while they go to work. I can tell just from the yelping that it's a young dog, and it just worries me that it's over there all alone all day long. So what do I do?

We don't know these neighbors. We assumed there was somebody moving in a couple weeks ago because we heard someone in the yard using a table saw, but still are only assuming someone bought the property (it was on the market for a while after an investor bought it out of foreclosure and fixed up the inside). I obviously want to give them the benefit of the doubt and not just immediately call the county ("Welcome to the neighborhood! Here's your fine."), but I also don't want to come across as a nosy nellie either. Should I maybe give it more time?

Re: Pet advice

  • If it's outside, I'd call Animal Control. It is entirely too hot for a domesticated animal to be outside all day... much less a puppy.

FWIW, Gus barks his freakin' head off every time he goes in his crate & he's REALLY loud. I can hear him outside the house, but I'm not sure how far away I'd be able to hear him though.

  • I'd give it time.  Maybe there's a doggie door you're not aware of that allows the dog to go in and out of the house.  That's what we have.
  • Thanks ladies. I'll keep an ear out, and maybe ask another neighbor in passing if I get the chance.

  • Personally, I would go spy on the yard/house and try to assess the situation with the dog. (Yes, I realize some of you will think I'm crazycakes but I don't give a shiit). If it's being left outside all the time, call animal control.

I would do this too.  A couple drive bys never hurt anyone.

    I agree with this.

If the dog is outside, definitely call animal control.

Tally is also a whiner/barker/sounds like she's being killed dog sometimes when we put her in our crate and leave the house.  I'm always scared someone is going to call animal control because she is so loud and it sounds like someone is beating her.  She's perfectly fine in her crate, but she just isn't a fan of us leaving the house.
