Too late for my watermelons?

My watermelon plants have lots of flowers but no fruit yet (I'm in zone 5b/6).  Is it too late for them to produce anything that could be harvested before frost would kill it?  I ask because it's a spacing issue - they're vining into my squash.  I can sacrifice 2 of my 4 squash to give them room if needed.  My beans just got blight so they have to come out too, but I'm hesitant to encourage the vines in that direction given the disease.

Can the watermelon pull off a late season crop, or should I just rip them out & plant something for the fall there?

Re: Too late for my watermelons?

  • I'm further south than you and it's taking our watermelons a lot longer to produce than our honeydew but they are finally starting to come in after having several failed rotten looking guys.  I'd let them run and see if you get some watermelon out of it.  We direct our watermelon out into the yard and away from our other plants.
