I heard about them breaking the streaming and DVDs into separate packages. Because I wanted to see new movies, I was going to sign up for the DVD by mail only package, but when I went on the website it looks like you have to sign up for streaming then if you want you can add DVDs - meaning no DVD-only package. I really don't want to pay for both, so is streaming only worth it? Is it all old stuff? How long does it take for new movies to stream?
Re: Netflix - worth it?
I don't think the new packages with DVD only start until September 1st. You might want to try back then.
Ditto cmh. I don't think they've separated the plans yet.
I personally enjoy streaming (we love documentaries, old shows, etc.) and think it has a pretty good selection, but some people don't. It takes awhile for the newer movies to be on streaming. They're available first on DVD. I'm not positive, but someone on here once said that they're trying convert more to streaming. However, with the new plans I'm not sure I see that happening any time soon.
When the packages change next month we plan to keep streaming and drop the DVD option. They have a good selection of recent movies on DVD, but Redbox will be much cheaper for us, especially with the free coupon codes they run often.
This. We plan on keeping streaming and supplementing with new movies from Red Box or similar rental venue. We really enjoy not knowing what we are going to watch when we settle in for a movie night and picking one out together. We have never been able to not find something to watch, they have thousands of options!
It is worth it for me since I tend to see most movies in the theater- so I don't care as much about new releases. It depends on the deal each distributor has with Netflix when a movie is available to stream (if at all). For example, the animated Disney movies on stream are extremely limited.
One of my favorite features of the streaming Netflix selection is that they have many full runs of many TV shows. So far, I've watched Dexter, True Blood, Doctor Who (not the newest Doctor, but the 2 before), Say Yes to the Dress, and currently watching Star Trek- Next Generation... and there are many more series available.

We have been customers with Netflix about 4 months now. At first it seemed the movie selection on stream was narrowed down to older flicks, so I was considering going threw the snail mail also. I later started to realize that the more the customer rates the new releases top stars and the more new releases you consistently download to veiw, the more new release choices Netlix will give us. So, its not that new releases are not available per stream, it just takes a while for the system to realize that is what you are wanting the most of. If you don't rate your choices, you'll never get what your looking for. Hope this helps!
Did you know you can search for specific titles? You don't have to wait for them to suggest it to you. I don't mean this to be snarky, but I wasn't sure if you're aware of it because it took us a bit to figure it out after getting Netlfix.
I do agree that the more things you watch the more things you'll find that you didn't think of or knew existed. We love watching documentaries and having similar ones suggested to us. Some of the best things we've watched are a few years old and slightly less known.
