Ok, so DH likes to camp and I like a hotel or cabin. I have gone camping when I was much younger and it was more like backpacking out in the middle of the woods with no facilities at all. i have never gone to a campground with showers and toilets, etc. so are they usually gross? Long lines? I have this paranoia of having to go the bathroom in the middle of the night and it being super chilly out. I guess it's just stupid, and I do remember how nice it was to wake up outside and cook food over a fire. I guess I have just gotten too set in my ways. So tell me about your expereinces? Largely good? Comme ci comme ca? You'd rather go in the woods than use those bathrooms?

Re: Talk to me about camping
I think it sort of depends where you camp. I've gone camping almost every summer of my life and I've never had to go in the woods. There have always been bathrooms, though the quality has varied a bit. Most of the campgrounds I've gone to have at least had flushing toilets and sinks, though I can think of one that didn't have lights (we brought in lanterns at night) and one where the stalls were missing doors... we just hung up towels, no biggie. Several have also had showers. I've also been to campgrounds that only had outhouses, but those had lights and TP and everything. They are survivable if you have some Purell on hand.
In summary, the vast majority of my campground bathroom experience has been just fine. Not disgusting, no long lines.

It really varies. For your first trip in a while (and what I prefer) is finding a place that has flushies instead of pit toilets, and showers.
With flushies, the grossest thing is the bugs that the light in the bathroom attracts. Pit toilets aren't bad, just stinky (despite my irrational fear that some strange creature down there is going to bite my coochie).
I've never seen long lines for showers. I would just be sure to bring flip flops in case the floor is yucky. And bring a bandanna or hat or something just in case. And some rope to hang your wet towel on is nice. And I do like to have wipes on hand because you always seem to get dirty. Are you bringing the babe?

Camping is what you make of it. Your enjoyment depends on what you can tolerate, your ability to go with the flow and laugh off minor disasters.
I've done car camping with no facilities. I've done backpacking with NOTHING around for miles. And I've done camping at a campground with bathrooms/showers. I've never used showers at these places so can't speak to that. The bathrooms I've seen can vary from totally disgusting and no TP, to very clean and well stocked. I always pack TP and hand sanitizer with me just in case. Honestly, going to the bathroom outside is easier and less gross to me than using a questionable public toilet. I also ran into a mouse at a campground toilet when we camped a couple of months ago (a result of someone throwing a food wrapped on the floor of the bathroom.)
If you really need to "bathe," try to go somewhere that has a swimmable lake or river/stream. You can also buy a solar shower, hang it from a tree and use it to take a quick rinse. It sounds fancier than it is; basically, it's just a soft plastic container that you fill up with water. You let it warm up in the sun for the day, then hang it from a tree and use an attached nozzle that shuts on and off to spray yourself with warm-ish water.
Overall, I enjoy camping. Disconnecting from reality, work, phones, computers, etc. Cooking outside and everything tasting amazing for some reason because you're camping. Enjoying quiet and fresh air and beautiful views. I think it's worth some of the inconveniences.
Oh, don't miss it. My parents still talk about the first time they took me camping as a kid. Just don't be high maintenance and you'll be fine.
LOL, high maintenance? Who me?with my carpal tunnel, my bad back and my stomach problems? Noooo, not me!
