I jinxed myself :(

You know how in the happies and crappies thread I was talking about how my CR-V is 9 years old and I still love it? Well, so much for that. I know a lot of you know this from FB, but I believe my CR-V is on its way to the salvage yard.

Early this morning I had to go to my fertility clinic for bloodwork. As I was driving up home on the highway, I rounded a curve and suddenly lost control of my car. I ended up smashing into a guardrail and my airbags deployed. The car was smoking and smelled like burning rubber (I think this was from the airbags), so I grabbed my phone and purse and got out of the car to call the police. No one stopped until a PSE&G truck pulled up (local utilility company for those not in NJ). I was in the left lane and the guy told me to go sit down in the right shoulder. Thank goodness he did, because a few minutes later another car the same exact make, model and color of my car spun out in exactly the same spot I did and crashed into the guardrail near where I had been standing.

I feel like it took forever for the cops to get there, but it was probably like 20 minutes. An ambulance came also and was treating my abrasions. I asked for an ambulance since I was worried about my nose which was bleeding but it had stopped by the time they got there.

As the EMTs were treating me and the cop was looking things over, we heard another squeal. Yet another car spun out of control, and this one crashed into the back of the cop car!  A few minutes later a fourth car spun out. This makes a total of 5 cars wrecked. There must have been some oil or something on the road that 4 cars spun out in a matter of minutes. Eventually more cops showed up and several tow trucks.

Thank goodness everyone seemed to be okay, and I am feeling fine although I think I will be achy tomorrow. I have some cuts and redness on my arms from the airbag and seatbelt - but those are the things that keep me from bad injuries so I'm not complaining. My knee has a big bruise on it and I expect to have trouble walking tomorrow but it could have been a lot worse. I'm pretty sure my car is totaled. I know the airbags alone cost something like $3K to fix, and that plus the body damage and cracked windshield > the value of my 9 year old car.

I am worried about my little embryos that were transferred on Friday. I'm hoping that since I wasn't jolted that much thanks to the airbag, that it didn't affect them.

So, if bad luck comes in threes, I should be good for a while.

Looks like I'll be car shopping sooner that I thought!

Re: I jinxed myself :(

  • Yikes! I'm SO glad you are ok. Tons of vibes that you aren't too sore tomorrow.

I can't believe so many cars skidded out of control at that spot! I hope they figure out what was there and were able to clean it up.

  • Holy crap!  Glad your okay minus a few bruises!!!

  • Hi, I usually just lurk, but I just wanted to say I'm so glad you are okay! That sounds horrible!

  • I sincerely hope your string of bad luck is over. It's just not fair! Although I have to imagine someone was looking out for you when that man told you to move or goodness knows what could have happened to you. A car is just a car, and I'm so thankful that you got out of that mess with some cuts and bruises.
  • I feel so bad for you!!!  You certainly don't need more stress lately :(  My gosh, when it rains, it pours, huh?  Sorry about your car, but at least you are okay.   I really hope that you have lots of good luck from here on in.  You have had your fill of worry for one person.

Did they ever find out why all those cars skidded?  Pretty scary!!!!

  • I am glad to hear you are alright. So sorry that this happened, car accidents are such a biitch.

Sending my thoughts your way that you can get all the insurance craziness figured out, and that the little embryos are doing alright!

  • So glad you are ok! Hopefully this is the end of the bad luck for a good while. and to have several other cars spin out in the same spot...that's just scary! Thank God for the person that told you to move...Will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers since you are more than likely going to be sore the next few days.

  • Lori!!! It is such great news that you came out of that alright (t&p's that your future 'little ones' are just fine also)!! How scary that must have been. You see those kind of bad multi-car accidents all the time and I can only imagine how scary it must have been to be involved in one. I sure hope that they cleaned that road...there definitely seemed to be a spill of some sort there. So glad again that no one was seriously injured.

  • Yikes!  Sounds like you had a guardian angel watching over you because it could have been much more serious.  Sending lots of Ts & Ps that you recover quickly and that the jarring helped with "little ones"!

  • I'm thankful that you are ok!! That must have been scary and especially with other people having the same experience after you. I hope they were able to clean up whatever was the problem so nobody else was injured. Lots of vibes for minimal soreness today and that your LOs are jostled in the best way possible!

  • Wow, that's scary! Glad you are ok! And usually no matter what, if your airbags go off they total out your car (at least that's how it is here).

  • Eek! I'm so glad you were not hurt badly!  I have a friend whose mom was in a fender bender in the left lane, and when she got out of her car she didn't move to the right shoulder and got hit and killed by a semi.  Thank goodness someone stopped to tell you to move the right shoulder!

Do they know what was on the road that wrecked 5 cars???

Sounds like your car did what it was built to do in an accident though, so yay for that! I hope you are doing better, please take it easy, hopefully you will have minimal pain from the airbags.
