Dogs/Shelties

I'm looking for a sheltie group or some sort of puppy play group in the Bowie, MD area or the surrounding area, about 20 minutes in distance. Anyone have any suggestions?

We just got a sheltie puppy and I'd love to socialize him with other shelties and get to know their traits.  I'm nervous about training him properly! Shelties are such unique dogs.

  • I'm sorry I don't have a specific recommendation but wanted to suggest searching meetup.com.  You may be able to find a local group through that site.

Congrats on your new puppy and GL with your search!!

  • I'm with you on this topic! I have a 7 year old Sheltie! We take him to our local dog park, but that is about it. When he was a puppy, he went herding and loved it, but he was living in WA at the time.

There may be some herding options up in PA, but I haven't investigated enough.

A guy I work with runs a Sheltie rescue and this is who I got my info from when I moved back to this area.

My advice (since he is a puppy), socialize him and encourage him/her not to be shy. Shelties are known for being a little stand offish and even myself or SO will have to tell him it is ok to play or say hi to someone. He is also not a snuggle bug, and my SO regrets not training him to be a little more friendly in that way.

I live fairly close to you, so if I ever discover a new group or something, I will leave a note on this board. Even if you can't find a Sheltie group, look for any/all herding dog type groups - I've noticed a lot at the dog park that the herding dogs play a certain way versus the hunting dogs (for example).
