My sleepy little Enfield town!
This is where DH grew up and where we lived together from '02 to '06. So weird to see the streets empty of people and blocked with police in riot gear. :-(
Dumb question: Have there always been "firearms officers" in the London Police? When did the police start carrying handguns? Sad stuff.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Re: My sleepy little Enfield town!
Regular officers don't carry firearms. But yes, there are firearms officers in the British Police Forces. I guess they is why they referred to them as 'Firearms Police Officers'
Wow. You just blew my mind a little bit. Really? They don't carry guns? Part of me thinks thats really neat, and part of me wonders how they could be taken seriously. lol
I don't think they are taken very seriously... people don't seem to have much respect for them
I know...it's a bit frightening that this is spreading and still going on. Lots of anger out there right now.
Yeah, the police do not carry guns. But then again, not too many of the criminals carry guns either. They do have other sorts of weapons though and in this instance, they do call in the armed police.
Well, I guess the man who was shot by police was known to be armed (I heard that a non-police handgun was recovered at the scene) so this is why a firearms officer was dispatched in this arrest?
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
It struck me as odd when I moved her, but it's much less of a gun culture.
A standard beat officer (called a 'bobby' here) would carry a baton, cuffs and pepper spray. And wear a daft hat. But yes, the respect for police here is not what I am used to in Australia.
It's interesting you say that. When I first moved here, that's how I felt - largely because of the gun situation. But now I actually have more respesct for them, in part because they don't carry guns.
