Poll: Did you have an open bar at your wedding?

Re: Poll: Did you have an open bar at your wedding?

  • I'm going to have an open bar.  I don't have strong feelings on it either way (the pseudo-cult I grew up in didn't allow alcohol, so all the weddings I went to until the age of 17 were dry).  I mean, as an adult I'd like the option to buy it if that's all they can afford.  I don't take it personally that the bride wanted to spend money elsewhere, although if the entire wedding was over the top and then they made you pay for drinks perhaps I would feel differently.

In my case, FH and I are both attorneys that make a solid amount of money, he owns two apartments in NY, we have very little student debt between us, my parents helped us with the wedding AND about 30% of the guests are flying in from the US.  I'd feel like a huge A-hole for not having an open bar.  Although technically we are just paying for each drink and the hotel is supposed to keep count, because they refused to quote us open bar prices.  This was part of the reason I almost had to cancel and find a new place to have the wedding - especially when they kept telling us that open bars were an "American" thing and they don't do that in Italy.  Ugh.  I don't get why the hotel and wedding planner feel the need to lie to us at every turn and then wonder why I don't trust them and just assume they are out to screw us.

We had a full open bar.  I've never been to a wedding that had a cash/restricted bar.

  • I don't even think there was a bar at all. There were drinks with the meal, and that was it. Of course, there was also no music and no place to dance, so it's not like anyone stuck around and would need another drink anyway. Yeah, my reception was awesome.
