How do put in resignation? Advice?

Hi ladies, I could use some advice.  I plan to put in my resignation from my job asap.  I have been employed with this company for 5 years.  I have decided to go to school to pursue a different career.  This is basically my first "real" job.  How do I go about putting in my resignation?  Do I write a letter and hand it to my boss?  Do I sit down with my boss and tell him I quit, what would I say?  Do I write a letter and sit down with my boss?  I honestly have no clue what to do.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

PS - My last day would be August 25 or 26.  If I give my notice tomorrow, is that sufficient time?

Re: How do put in resignation? Advice?

  • 2 week notice is standard, so putting in your notice this week would be fine.

Write up a small letter that simply states that (insert your name here) is resigning the position of (insert title here) effective on (insert end date here).

That's all the more it needs to/should say.  It's a formal notice of your end date for their HR department.  The letter doesn't need to state why you're leaving, just that you are leaving.

I think it's best if you can schedule a meeting with your boss to give them the letter in person.  It's their job to make a copy to send to HR.

  • Yes, it is sufficient time.

Since you have been there for five years, I'd sit down with your boss and let him/her know the situation.  Have it in writing so that they can put the letter in your employee file, but the actual "I'm leaving" conversation should be verbal and in person.

  • Have a resignation letter ready. It just needs to say you resign your position effective [last day]. Remember that it's merely paperwork for HR to have showing your dates of employment.

Schedule a meeting with your boss and let them know you're resigning. Tell them you have a resignation letter ready for HR.

    That's pretty much it. GL

  • This.

You defnitley want to have an in person conversation first, where they'll usually ask for a letter.

And be sure to send a thank you card after you've left thanking them for the opportunity.
