Landscaping the backyard with fake grass

My backyard came as a blank slate. We'd like to put fake grass in the back, but I think we need some kind of fine gravel to level the ground before we lay the grass. Has anyone here in Clark County gotten fake grass? I'd like to know what was involved with it.

  • It's not gravel that you need.  Flat slates of rock are laid down, followed by the fake grass, which is nailed down to the slates.

My neighbors said to go to Home Depot on Rainbow for the supplies and then pick up some of the hispanic gentlemen out front to install.  That is what they did and their yard looks awesome.  The slates come in pieces, they looked to be about 2'x1' or so.  Obviously you have to dig a little bit into your yard and level it before laying the slates.  I think they dug about 3" deep uniformly.  This step is similar to laying a brick patio.

However, if you have pets, this isn't the best idea.  You can hose off when they pee but I've been warned that in the sun fake grass + animal pee = awful smell.

  • We do have pets. Ferrets to be exact, but they live indoors and will probably only come to the backyard once a year. Thanks for the warning about that!

  • Aw, my husband had a ferret when he was a kid and he loved it :D

I guess the smell comes from no dirt to absorb the pee?  I'm really not sure.  They have 2 dogs and never let them in the backyard, they walk them to the park (which is only 2 houses away from us so really no big deal).

  • I've been wondering about pets and the fake grass myself, thanks!
