Lawn: How to start over?

Popping over from The Bump for some advice from you wise ladies-

DH and I are tired of fighting with our yard of weeds and have decided to start over & have an irrigation system installed.

Our plan is to rip/till up the current yard then bring in topsoil and seed, but don't know where in the process it would be best to install the irrigation.

Any advice? Any "better" way to do it? Thanks!!!  We're handy inside but are both terrible with anything outside.

Re: Lawn: How to start over?

  • The easiest and most successful way I have read about/heard of is this.....note, I have not tried this since I have not done lawn renovation, but this is what I hear is recommended for total lawn renovation.

    1. Water entire lawn to wake up weeds. Kill entire lawn using Roundup or Kilz-all.

2, Wait two weeks and reapply to any parts not totally killed.

    3. In September, rent a seed-sliiter and use that to seed the lawn. (don't use a tiller, you will just wake up more weed seeds) You can ask at your garden center for the setting--or wherever you buy the seed--and you will go back and forth, up and down directions with your slitter.

    4. Seed--don't buy seed at the big box store! Get what is recommended for your area (ask at a local garden store). Here it is tall fescue (I live in so. Ohio).

    5. You will need to water it 15 min a day or so until it has germinated and grown 2 in. or so. Don't cut it until it is 2-3 inches.

I hope this helps! I just read an article about this in last weekend's paper and it emphasized that the tilling is unnecessary work and just brings other weed seeds up to the surface to germinate.
