This insurance thing is quite difficult.

So the university doesn't provide insurance, but it's really cheap here (and you don't really need it, but the public hospitals do not have the best care, cleanest facilities, etc).

The top end insurance is about $150 for both DH and I, and includes everything, and I mean everything from dental and cancer to prenatal yoga and liposuction after delivery (WTF?).

But we can get rather cheap insurance (maybe $60 a month for both DH and I)  if we want to go to one particular clinic (which is not far from our home, maybe 10 blocks, and a $2 cab ride, there are others around too, all with the same sort of insurance deal).  Most private clinics offer all the services we'd need, maybe not the best doctor in town, but good nonetheless. Clean, safe, sanitary, etc.   But we would have to go to just this one clinic for for all care.

WWIND? Would you spend the money to get the super duper insurance, or would you cut back on your budget and get the clinic-specific insurance.

  • How does it work if you're away from home (say on a trip within the country) and need a doctor? With the clinic specific one are you screwed?

This is a good question for both companies.  I will have to ask.  I have a feeling both companies will not pay for anything but catastrophe outside of the city, only in public hospitals.

  • I'm one to always choose top notch insurance. I'd go with the expensive one. 150 for 2 people still isn't very expensive and having GREAT insurance is worth it IMO. I don't ever want to run the risk of something not being covered, or thinking it would be covered but it wasn't and still ending up with a big bill.

I'd go with the expensive one!

  • I'd go with the super-duper insurance.  $150/month is not a lot of money to pay for peace of mind.
  • I'd rather be over-insured than under-insured.  Go with the big guns.
