how do I finish this project???

I am making a tank top styled dress/ tunic (depends on how it fits my 10year old cousin) my question is how do I finish the raw edges at the top? (its already hemmed) do I use Bias tape? fold , iron and sew? I know this question sounds stupid, but I'm out of my comfort zone and my confidence took a hit on this project!

TIA <3

Re: how do I finish this project???

  • Are you talking about the neckline? What fabric are you using- what kind of closure is there at the neck, if any? You'll obviously need to be able to fit the neck over her head, and if the neckline is wide enough (or has a closure that opens enough), non-stretchy finishing methods should be okay. But, bias tape doesn't stretch enough for a narrow t-shirt type opening- you'll need to use fabric with good stretch and recovery and a stretchy stitch.

You can always add a slit down the back and use bias tape to finish the neckline and slit, and add a hood and loop or button and loop closure at the top. Or add a slit to the front and make it a design detail.

  • I'm concerned about the neck line and the arm holes. the material is not a very stretchy cotton. I don't think there will be an issue fitting over her head, this was originally intended for myself.

  • Bias tape will be the easiest answer, if she can fit that over her head. That's kind of a big if with non-stretchy dresses without a closure, though- they really can be tough to wiggle into (and out of)! Again, though- if that ends up an issue, you can just slit the back and add a button/loop. If it's convenient to try it on her, or if you're similar enough sizes and you can put it on easily enough, just try the bias tape.

ETA: Just for future reference, another solution to this type of neckline/arm scye, is to use a lining at the bodice. :)

  • Thank you Cmeon. I'm a little scared about the neck too. I only get 1 shot at this, she lives in Germany! But she's a peanut (the smallest 10 year old I know), so I think I'm just being paranoid!

    THANKS!!!!!
