Suggest your Digital DSLR Camera

Looking to get a new camera.  I want to get a Digital DSLR.  I am a newbie so I need something that is easy to figure out off the bat but has capabilities that will allow me to fiddle with in the future once I learn how.  Not too expensive - under $750??

  • I have a Nikon D3000 and love it. Being an SLR, it has all the manual settings, but the auto settings take amazing photos on their own. I usually leave it on no flash, simply because I hate the light that all built-in flashes create and with the vibration reduction in the lens, if you have a reasonably steady hand you can take most photos without the flash and still get a crisp image. It takes photos quickly, so it's great for sports or wildlife photography when it's set on continuous shutter. There is also a guide to help you take better pictures in different lighting situations. You can get the body and lens for $5-600. (keep in mind, memory cards are separate and you will need a case. Depending on these things, it could run you another $100).

  • Canon T2 or T3 - I don't have either but I am a Canon fan and went by the price point :)

  • I have a Nikon D5000 & really like it.  I haven't spent the time figuring out all the features, so my photos are pretty basic, but they're still good!  DH got it for my Christmas gift last year... it was about $750 from Costco & came with a bag, 2 lenses, memory card, instructional DVD, charger & cables.
  • I got mine last year, Olympuc E520. It's inexpensive but great to learn on and still takes great pics. My friend had a $2500 Nikon and my pics turned out better than hers (or maybe it was just my super amazing skill!)

Anyway, I would definitely recommend it for beginners. The only problem with not getting a Nikon or Canon is that everything is "built" around those two brands. You'll have an easier time finding lenses or sharing equipment etc if you have a Nikon or Canon. Being the odd one out I have to google a lot or just figure stuff out on my own because all my photographer friends use Nikons or Canons. Just FYI. Doesn't bother me though, I'm still happy with my camera.
